Marvel Studios has changed the title of its latest movie, Thunderbolts*, to The New Avengers just one week after its release. This change has surprised many, especially because the original title included an asterisk that had generated various theories and speculations in the fan community. From questions about its meaning to possible references to other iconic teams, such as the West Coast Avengers or the Dark Avengers, the asterisk sparked an intense debate among MCU followers.
Thunderbolts* have always been the New Avengers
Marvel’s decision to reveal the new title so soon has been criticized as a spoiler, as it significantly affects the viewer’s experience. In the past, the company has been accused of revealing too much in its trailers, but this maneuver has gone a step further; it has modified the promotional posters replacing Thunderbolts* with The New Avengers, a change that comes almost immediately after the movie hit theaters.
Despite receiving positive reviews, the box office success of Thunderbolts* has been moderate, falling behind other MCU releases, such as Captain America: Brave New World. The film, directed by Jake Schreier and featuring a cast that includes Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, has stood out for bringing together some of the most charismatic anti-heroes in the Marvel universe. However, this limited success has led the company to seek more appealing names that can capture the interest of the general public.
Despite the uproar generated, Marvel has confirmed that The New Avengers will return in Avengers: Doomsday, one of the upcoming installments in Phase 6 of the MCU, which promises to be an epic crossover between several generations of superheroes. Therefore, fans who have not yet seen the movie should do so as soon as possible, before more details about the plot are revealed on social media or in promotional material.
