Today, one of Netflix’s clearest global franchise wins. The Spanish heist drama first ran in Spain on Antena 3 in 2017, as a self-contained 15-episode story that aired between May and November. Then Netflix re-edited it into 22 shorter episodes for international viewers, and that version became the streamer’s first non-English series to truly break through worldwide.
From there, Netflix stretched Money Heist into five seasons and spun it off with Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area and Berlin. The setup, a Professor-led heist, was simple enough to travel. What gave the show its pull was everything wrapped around it: Tokyo’s narration, the jumps in time, the flashbacks, the shifting points of view, the constant reversals. It clicked across markets, and the series went on to win the 2018 International Emmy for Best Drama Series.
For a useful counterexample, put it next to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and see what happens when huge launch numbers don’t turn into a durable brand. Netflix said that film reached 75 million households and 186.54 million hours in its first 28 days. Army of Thieves also hit No. 1 in more than 90 countries and logged 49.64 million hours.
Then, in August 2024, Planet of the Dead and Lost Vegas were reportedly canceled, leaving just a theme-park tie-in and suggesting some fallout from the weaker reception to Rebel Moon.
You can stream Money Heist and its spinoffs on Netflix.
