We know that Apple is preparing the launch of a new device that aims to be the central point of the smart home ecosystem. Under the code name “J490,” this mysterious accessory, provisionally known as “HomeAccessory,” would combine the functionalities of an iPad, an Apple TV, and a HomePod, according to the latest leaks. Beyond this, we know little. Or rather, we knew little, as more details about its operation and features are beginning to emerge.
A design that revolves around Apple Intelligence
One of the elements that most attracts attention about the HomeAccessory is its design, which differs from the typical rectangular format we usually see in devices like the iPad. In its current version, according to 9to5mac, the device features a square format display. It is still unclear whether this design will be maintained in the final version or if Apple will opt for a more traditional solution, but the choice, at least, is attention-grabbing.
As far as we know, this new device will be equipped with the A18 chip, which suggests that it will have remarkable performance, especially in terms of artificial intelligence. AI is not present in the current HomePod but it will undoubtedly ensure that the device is capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously, such as running applications, media playback, and controlling home devices.
Another key feature of this device is its integrated camera, which will allow video calls via FaceTime and other compatible apps. Additionally, the HomeAccessory’s camera has the ability to identify gestures from a distance, opening the door to new forms of interaction without the need to touch or speak to the device.
According to the leaked information, the camera will also allow the device to recognize people in front of it, enabling personalized requests, similar to what already happens with HomePods, which can differentiate between the voices of different household members.
Finally, it has been discovered that the HomeAccessory will be able to run applications autonomously, just like the Apple TV. It will also function as an AirPlay receiver, allowing us to send content from other Apple devices to view or listen to on the new device. Additionally, it seems that the device will include a customizable lock screen with multiple clock styles, similar to those added to the Apple TV interface with the update to tvOS 18.
With a launch planned for Spring 2025, Apple still has time to fine-tune details and improve the product before its official presentation. The plans, as always, could change before the final date.
Awaiting the official name of the HomeAccessory, Apple continues to place great importance on home automation devices, focusing on a product that integrates entertainment, communication, and home control functions into a single device. A device about which we know a little more each time and each detail we discover surprises us.
