Mozilla shuts down Pocket to focus on Firefox: What now

In a strategic pivot, Mozilla has announced the shutdown of its long-standing read-it-later service, Pocket, as it redirects efforts toward enhancing Firefox. This marks a significant shift for the company, which has maintained Pocket for over a decade. The move reflects Mozilla’s decision to prioritize core products amidst evolving user behavior in web browsing and content consumption.

Pocket to shut down in July 2025

Pocket will officially cease operations on July 8, 2025, following the app’s removal from download platforms and the discontinuation of Premium subscriptions. Refunds for annual subscribers are set to begin in July, and users will have until October 8 to export saved items before all data is permanently deleted. Mozilla’s API for Pocket will also be shut down on that date.

Firefox takes center stage

Mozilla is not just retiring Pocket. Fakespot, a service acquired in 2023, will also be sunset, with its Firefox extension ending on June 10 and all related platforms closing by July 1. The decision underscores Mozilla’s aim to modernize Firefox with features like Tab Groups and enhanced bookmarks, offering native alternatives to services like Pocket.

A shift toward AI and built-in features

According to Mozilla, the way people interact with online content has fundamentally changed, pushing the company to integrate more discovery and reading tools directly into Firefox. Pocket’s influence will live on through curated recommendations in the browser, while Mozilla hints at future AI-powered innovations to meet users’ evolving needs.

The shutdown signals not an end, but a reallocation of resources toward tools that better align with today’s browsing habits and expectations.
