Looks like Netflix’s English-language Squid Game series isn’t happening after all. Multiple reports published in August 2026 say the David Fincher-backed project is dead.
Those same reports say Netflix pulled the plug after a long stretch in development, some executive turnover, and scheduling pressure tied to Fincher’s other work. The project had already started to look less certain after reports that Fincher wouldn’t renew his overall Netflix deal once it expires in 2027.
That’s a pretty big shift, because people had been hearing about this spinoff since 2024, even though Netflix never officially turned Squid Game into a scripted English-language series. And all of that speculation was happening while the original kept putting up huge numbers: Season 1 still leads with 265.2 million views, while Seasons 2 and 3 reached 192.6 million and 145.8 million, Netflix says. Season 3 even hinted at a U.S. expansion, with Cate Blanchett showing up as a recruiter in Los Angeles.
So if you were expecting an American remake, this update points in another direction. Netflix seems to be leaning toward other international stories instead, and the reaction so far has been fairly calm, sometimes even positive. Some viewers have argued that a U.S. version could have dulled the original’s anti-capitalist edge, and Forbes called the decision a wise one.
You can still watch Squid Game on Netflix, along with Squid Game: The Challenge, which has already been renewed.
