Street Fighter is the highest-grossing film of the week, but it’s a failure next to a documentary and the big Spanish hit of the moment

Street Fighter opened in theaters as the big winner of the week, though not without caveats. While it grossed $31 million at the U.S. box office, bringing in $51.1 million worldwide, it has fallen very far short of the numbers put up by the other big recent Capcom movie release. Resident Evil grossed $60 million worldwide on opening weekend just a month ago, leaving Street Fighter well behind the huge success Zach Cregger’s film has been.

Two films that could make history

The big successes of the week have also been a documentary and a Spanish film. You Can See Everything, the documentary by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, grossed $15 million in its opening weekend and is on its way to becoming the highest-grossing documentary since the Melania Trump documentary. It also reached the top spot on Letterboxd‘s all-time ranking.

On the other hand, La bola negra is the big hit nobody expected. Netflix ran a limited release in four theaters and the results have been excellent. With $69,575 per theater, it grossed $277,500, posting the best average of the week and the second-best average in history for a non-English-language film. Second only to the Oscar-winning Parasite.

On top of that, this week, in Spain, La bola negra has already managed to surpass Torrente Presidente both in admissions and at the box office. It could also outgross Ocho apellidos catalanes.
