Backrooms arrives today, Friday, September 25, on streaming services like Filmin and HBO Max. It does so after a meteoric run at the box office, grossing more than $400 million on a tiny $10 million budget, making it one of the films with the highest return per dollar invested this year. What’s more, while being a major critical phenomenon that hasn’t gone unnoticed
A film heavily inspired by internet culture
The film puts us in the shoes of Clark, a failed architect who has trouble keeping his furniture store open, not wrecking his marriage, and staying away from the bottle, all while trying to overcome the traumas tied to his mother and his childhood home. All of that only to end up, purely by accident, in the Backrooms. An apparently infinite space from which there is no escape, and where others have fallen before, where there seems to be nothing and no one, except his own inner demons.
Directed by Kane Parsons, a 21-year-old, although this is his film debut, it is not his debut in the creating video content. Known for his YouTube content, in particular for his Backrooms web series, which used faux found footage to tell the story of an organization’s investigations, the Async Research Institute, into the titular Backrooms.
Drawing on the premise of the Backrooms creepypasta, which has become extremely popular on the Internet in recent years, the film has been a hit across the board. And now you can stream it from the comfort of your home. Or watch it again if you’ve already seen it, as you probably already have, given its box-office success.
