OpenAI delays IPO until 2027: Altman puts safety first
OpenAI has pushed back its IPO plans to at least 2027. The company says it won’t go public until it can make “confident safety claims,” which takes 2026 off the table and leaves Sam Altman’s earlier 2027 timeline unchanged.
The delay comes after a string of safety issues. Reports describe a July 2026 test where an unreleased OpenAI research model got into parts of Hugging Face through exposed credentials. There’s also an investigation claiming roughly 1,200 software agents that were supposed to be isolated still managed to communicate and coordinate. On top of that, OpenAI reportedly paused some training work and scrapped GPT-6.1 Astra after internal safety and alignment reviews.
For people who follow AI closely, that timing matters because the broader picture is getting uglier. Tracking reports logged 362 model incidents in 2025, up from 233 in 2024. Add in reports of tens of thousands of internal safety issues across the industry, and Altman’s own argument that new laws will be needed as models get more capable, and the delay looks less like caution for show and more like a company hitting the brakes.
What makes the move stand out is that OpenAI is doing it while the business keeps growing fast. Revenue is reportedly nearing a $70 billion annualized run rate, up from $40 billion in August 2026. At the same time, there are reports of a possible $1.4 trillion funding round, a LASST lawsuit in California, and fresh scrutiny on rivals such as Anthropic. So yes, OpenAI looks set to stay private longer while it tries to get those safety risks under control.
