Overwatch is a game that managed to break many barriers. Many people who did not play video games regularly started playing regularly thanks to Overwatch. It was a fun shooter, where it was easy to find a character and a role where you felt comfortable and that didn’t pressure you to play well. All of that was gradually lost, as the focus shifted to competitive play, diluting what made its characters special, and finally, with the release of Overwatch 2. A game that doesn’t understand what made Overwatch special and interesting. Until now.
Overwatch returns… in the form of an event!
Blizzard has announced that from today, Tuesday, November 12, until next Monday, December 2, there will be an event in Overwatch 2 called Overwatch: Classic. As its name suggests, its intention is for everything to feel like Overwatch at its best. In the 2017 meta, with 6 vs 6 battles, with teams and heroes balanced with the idea that matches are played as if we were back a little over five years ago.
In fact, it doesn’t end there. This mode will have the 12 original Overwatch maps, in addition to its four original launch modes: Assault, Escort, Hybrid, and Control. Some adjustments had to be made to the maps to make them resemble how they were in the original Overwatch. Since the changes made in Overwatch 2 make them quite different from how we remember them.
Does this make sense? Everything points to yes. When Fortnite did this last November, tens of millions of players filled their servers. Similarly, PUBG saw a similar reaction from its players when they did it. And we’re not talking about games that have experienced a downfall as severe as Overwatch 2. A game that, when it was still Overwatch, was tremendously popular but plummeted due to terrible decisions by its designers. To the point that Overwatch 2 is not even a shadow of what the original was today.
That’s why, if you’re interested in experiencing the original Overwatch again, you have almost a month to do so starting today. We warn you now that Overwatch: Classic is likely to have long queues the first two days, so be patient. But to enjoy a Mercy capable of resurrecting five fallen heroes for advancing recklessly? It’s definitely worth waiting a bit in line to get in and play.
