The official Season 13 rules for Pokémon Legends: Z-A are up, and they confirm a clear change: when the season starts on June 25, Legendary and Mythical Pokémon will be banned from ranked battles until July 16.
So from June 25 to July 16, ranked play won’t allow any Legendary or Mythical Pokémon at all. That’s a pretty sharp turn from Season 12. Per the official Season 12 rules, players could bring up to two restricted Pokémon on each team.
Now those Pokémon are out completely. That’s likely to change how people build teams, how matches play out, and what the online ladder looks like from day to day. With the biggest power picks removed, players will probably lean toward more balanced lineups, and a wider set of strategies should have room to work.
The early response has mostly been positive, especially from players who were ready to move on from Season 12 and its handful of dominant threats. If you enjoyed the big, swingy, all-or-nothing feel of last season, though, Season 13 might come across as a little less explosive. Still, for anyone who plays ranked because they like steadier matches and more consistency, this looks like a season to check out.
Ranked battles in Pokémon Legends: Z-A play out in real time as three-minute free-for-all matches for up to four players. The objective is simple: get the most knockouts before the timer hits zero, then keep climbing the ladder from Rank Z up to Rank A.
The official Season 13 details also list promotion rewards, including the Mega Stones Blazikenite, Swampertite, and Sceptilite. Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched in October 2025, takes place in Lumiose City, and is available now on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
