The PlayStation 6 rumor cycle is still pointing to 2027. Hardware insider Kepler_L2 has pushed back on the recent claims that Sony may have moved the console to 2028 or even 2029.
Kepler_L2 reportedly called 2027 “the plan.” That fits Sony’s usual seven-year console rhythm: the PlayStation 5 arrived in 2020, and most leak-heavy reporting has stayed in that same window for months.
The talk of a delay started to pick up after analysts flagged rising component costs in an Embracer report, with DRAM prices in particular climbing because of AI-driven demand. Even with that hanging over the industry, leakers like Moore’s Law Is Dead argue that pushing the PlayStation 6 too far back would create a costly mess for Sony, especially if the reported manufacturing commitments with AMD and TSMC are already locked in.
So if you’ve been following Sony’s next console, the big takeaway is pretty simple: 2027 still looks like the safest bet. Some analysts aren’t sold, though. MST Financial’s David Gibson, along with reports out of Japan, has suggested Sony may decide to stretch the PlayStation 5 generation out for longer.
There’s also the rest of the 2027 chatter. Rumors are still floating around about a PlayStation 6 handheld companion, reportedly codenamed Canis, and Microsoft’s next Xbox, Project Helix, is also said in reports to be targeting holiday 2027.
Sony still hasn’t announced the PlayStation 6 officially, so for now, confirmed details on its release and platform plans will have to wait.
