Recently, Reddit experienced one of the most critical moments in its history. Thousands of communities, including some with millions of followers, went “dark” in protest against Reddit’s new policies that imposed a price on the use of its API, which is widely used by app developers on the platform.
After a highly repressive and almost dictatorial approach from Reddit’s administration, subreddits gradually returned to being active, and practically all apps that were previously used by both users and moderators are now disabled due to the high cost of using Reddit’s API.
In this new normality established by the Reddit regime, the platform has decided to update its content policy to align with modern times. And what exactly have they done? They have allowed AI-generated pornography of fictional characters.
Reddit explicitly banned deepfake pornography generated by AI in 2018, stating that “involuntary pornography” is not acceptable and modifying its Rule 3 to prohibit representations of nudity or sexual content that “may have been falsified”. However, Reddit has now changed this policy to allow AI-generated sexual content depicting fictional individuals or characters.
Specifically, the updated policy includes the following text: “Note that this rule does not apply to commercially distributed media with the consent of the individuals depicted, AI-generated sexual content depicting fictional individuals or characters, or artistic representations (such as cartoons, anime, etc.), although please remember our rules regarding the respect of third-party intellectual property.”
However, Reddit has clarified that AI-generated content would still violate their policies if it depicts a real person who can be identified. Additionally, AI-generated pornographic content must be appropriately labeled as sexually explicit and/or offensive, and any sexual or suggestive content involving a minor, even if fictional, is strictly prohibited from being shared.
