Prada teams up with NASA: Fashion meets space in next-gen Moon suits

Prada is partnering with Axiom Space, a commercial space enterprise, to craft the next generation of spacesuits for NASA’s Artemis III mission, set to launch in 2025. This mission is making history as it intends to send the first woman to the Moon, marking our return to lunar exploration since the iconic Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

Prada’s expertise in fashion design will meet Axiom Space’s technical prowess in a mission to redefine spacesuit technology. The focus of this partnership is to create spacesuits that can withstand the extreme challenges of space and the Moon’s unforgiving environment. These advanced spacesuits are expected to equip astronauts with the tools they need for a successful lunar expedition.

Pioneering lunar exploration: What the mission entails

In more ways than one, Artemis III is a game-changing quest. It not only aims to return people to the lunar surface, but it also features a female astronaut, Christina Koch, as part of its crew for the first time. The project entails sending a NASA astronaut team to the Moon aboard the Orion spacecraft for many weeks of exploration of the lunar landscape. SpaceX has been chosen to deliver the human landing system, which will allow people to safely descend and ascend between lunar orbit and the Moon’s surface.

The principal purpose of these next-generation spacesuits is to provide astronauts with increased movement and flexibility. This will allow them to investigate a wider spectrum of lunar terrain, furthering our understanding of our cosmic neighbor. According to Axiom Space, these spacesuits are designed to provide higher flexibility, increased protection against the harsh conditions of the Moon, and specialized instruments for scientific investigation, offering “greater exploration of the lunar surface than ever before.”

Prada’s expertise: Beyond the runway

While Prada may appear to be an unusual contender for space technology, the company’s involvement in this initiative stems from its mastery of materials and production. Notably, Prada’s participation in the America’s Cup sailing competition stretches beyond the realm of design. Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, a veteran astronaut with five NASA flights and four spacewalks under his belt, recognizes Prada’s skills with composite textiles, which might contribute significantly to the outer layers of the new spacesuit.

However, Professor Hoffman emphasizes the paramount importance of functionality in spacesuit design, stating, “A spacesuit is really like a miniature spacecraft. It has to provide pressure, oxygen, keep you at a reasonable temperature.” As a result, while Prada adds its own design to the table, the primary focus remains on ensuring that the spacesuits function properly, protecting the crew on their lunar journey.
