That part hasn’t changed on current-gen hardware. Red Dead Redemption 2 still plays via backward compatibility, not as a proper native release built for these consoles.
On PlayStation 5, that also means the game is still capped at 30 FPS. Players have been hoping for more for a long time: enhanced features, faster load times, and 60 FPS support. None of that has shown up.
Insider NatetheHate2 says a next-gen version may already be real, and could even be finished. According to that claim, the holdup isn’t technical. Rockstar is reportedly sitting on it for strategic reasons.

If you’ve paid attention to Rockstar lately, that doesn’t sound all that wild. The studio has already pulled back support for Red Dead Online while GTA 6 keeps soaking up development time, internal resources, and probably plenty of marketing attention too. There have also been reports saying Red Dead Redemption 2 was once being kept in reserve as a fallback release, just in case GTA 6 slipped past its reported November 19, 2026 date.
For anyone still waiting on a real current-gen version of one of Rockstar’s most impressive technical showpieces, that’s going to sting. Still, this is all insider talk for now. Rockstar hasn’t announced anything, and it hasn’t confirmed anything either. As things stand, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still available on PlayStation and Xbox, and on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, it still runs through backward compatibility.
