Resident Evil stayed at No. 1 in mainland China for a third weekend in a row, taking in RMB 37.6 million ($5.6 million) from Oct. 23 to 25.
By Oct. 24, the film’s total in China had already pushed past $60 million, making Resident Evil just the fourth Hollywood release to hit that mark in the country in 2026.
It opened on Oct. 5 during China’s Golden Week holiday, pulled in about $12.1 million from Oct. 9 to 11, added $9.3 million from Oct. 16 to 18, and reportedly collected $12.2 million on its first day, the biggest opening day ever for a Hollywood horror title in the market.
Worldwide, Resident Evil is now closing in on $400 million against a reported $75 million production budget.
If you keep an eye on China’s box office, this run stands out. The National Day holiday period fell 36% year over year to a 12-year low, year-to-date box office was about $4.67 billion as of Oct. 19, down 29.2% from 2025, and domestic films accounted for eight of China’s top 10 releases in 2026.
Analysts have said the real story has less to do with travel or short-video apps and more to do with the shortage of strong local crowd-pleasers, which has left Resident Evil in a good position to benefit from brand recognition, a relatively open lane, and repeat audiences.
Resident Evil is now playing in cinemas across mainland China.
