“Resident Evil” held onto the top spot at the mainland China box office for a second straight weekend, pulling in RMB 62.5 million, or roughly $9.3 million to $9.4 million, based on local box office estimates. That brings the film to about $56.1 million in China since its late start during the country’s Golden Week holiday.
Its first full weekend, on Oct. 9-11, came in at $12.1 million and was reported as the strongest debut for a Hollywood horror title in China in the past two years. The second-weekend hold makes this look like more than an opening-weekend spike. The franchise name still carries weight, the seasonal timing helps, and word of mouth seems to be holding up.
For anyone who watches box office patterns closely, this run stands out. By mid-October, industry grosses had “Resident Evil” above $320 million worldwide, enough to make it the highest-grossing film in the series. That’s especially notable given how much of China’s box office was still being controlled by local releases, with eight of the top 10 films on Oct. 11 coming from the domestic side.
On Douban, the Chinese review platform, the movie has a 7.3 rating, which points to a fairly warm response overall. A lot of the praise has gone to its entertainment value and the feeling that it brings a somewhat fresher angle. Some fans of the games still think it plays too loosely with the source material, though. You can spot similar room for imported genre movies in China in the runs of films like “Alien: Romulus” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines.”
“Resident Evil” is now playing in theaters in China.
