Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy Card in the U.S. today. It’s the company’s first co-branded credit card for American consumers, and the whole pitch is tied tightly to Galaxy devices, Samsung services, and Samsung Wallet, which is Samsung’s digital wallet.
Samsung says the card gives you 5% cashback on Samsung purchases, 3% on transactions made through Samsung Wallet, 2% on select streaming services, and 1% on everything else. There’s also a $200 statement credit if you spend $2,000 in the first 90 days. No annual fee, either, according to Samsung.
Samsung is putting its own ecosystem front and center here, so if you already spend money on Galaxy phones, tablets, wearables, or accessories on a regular basis, this looks like a card that’s probably worth picking up.
The more interesting part is Samsung Wallet. Samsung says you’ll be able to apply for the Samsung Galaxy Card, manage it, and use it directly on Galaxy devices, and that 3% rate on Samsung Wallet transactions gives people a real reason to choose Samsung’s payment system over competing options. Barclays is issuing the Samsung Galaxy Card on the Visa network, Samsung says, which should let the company scale fast without having to build the banking infrastructure on its own.
This is Samsung’s answer to Apple Card, though right now it comes off more like a loyalty perk than a true mass-market card, especially since APR details , privacy, and long-term competitiveness are still unclear. Samsung says you can get the Samsung Galaxy Card through Samsung Wallet on supported Galaxy devices in the U.S.
