Duolingo’s New Venture: A Music App to Enhance Learning and Creativity

As TechCrunch has been able to verify, Duolingo, the company behind the best-known app for learning languages, would be working on a music app.

Do you use Duolingo? This popular app, with more than 500 million users, allows you to learn and improve languages (such as Klingon) through a variety of tests and games. Now, according to TechCrunch, Duolingo is preparing to launch a music app that will help you learn basic music theory concepts using qualified teachers and popular songs.

Duolingo would have a small team working on this app, and would be looking for a learning scientist who is a “music education expert who combines both theoretical knowledge of relevant learning science research and practical teaching experience,” as well as a freelance curriculum and music composition consultant, according to several public job postings.

At the moment, not much more is known about this music app or how it will eventually be released. It is also not known whether the app would, for example, help users to read and write music, learn instruments or even more. It could also be an app experiment that never materialized, for whatever reason.

What is clear is that the company shows interest in expanding its catalog of services. In addition to learning languages, Duolingo also lets you learn math with Duolingo Math, a free app that follows the same system as Duolingo, which requires methodical thinking as well as the ability to apply functions in order to arrive at answers.

A music app could be used to learn much more about everything we listen to in our daily lives, and understand, for example, why certain songs are catchier than others or what certain compositions are intended to achieve on an emotional level.
