Steam rolls out Personal Calendar: a new way to discover games
Steam has rolled out Personal Calendar to everyone after testing it in Steam Labs. For regular Steam users, it adds a new way to keep track of upcoming releases and games that just launched, with picks tied to what they actually care about.
Valve says the feature is meant to address one of Steam’s oldest headaches: discovery. The goal is to mix timely releases with recommendations that feel personal, so the feed isn’t just whatever is already popular, or more of the exact same thing you already play.
According to Valve, Personal Calendar pays closest attention to the games you genuinely spend time with. It also pulls from wishlist data and from players whose habits line up with yours. The feed updates daily, though Valve says it shouldn’t lurch around just because you sampled something briefly.
The company also says it’s trying to stop the feature from turning into a filter bubble. When needed, it widens recommendations across genres. Valve adds that placement in Personal Calendar can’t be bought, and the feed isn’t being manually curated.
So far, the early numbers look promising. Valve says players click through to more than 2,000 different games from Personal Calendar on an average day, and some indie developers are already seeing wishlist bumps and better traffic than they got from Steam’s older Popular Upcoming tool.
If you use Steam a lot, you’ll probably want to take a look.
