Steven Spielberg needs 'The Day of Revelation' to earn 350 million. It won't make more than 35 in its opening weekend

It’s not Steven Spielberg’s fault. Really. After his last two unjustified failures (The Fabelmans and West Side Story), the director has tried to keep his latest film, The Day of Revelation, to a minimum, shooting a blockbuster for only 115 million dollars, which, in theory, he could recover without much effort. It’s not Steven Spielberg’s fault. Really. After his last two unjustified failures (The Fabelmans and West Side Story), the director has tried to keep his latest film, The Day of Revelation, under the radar, making a blockbuster for only 115 million dollars, which, in theory, he could recover without much effort. However, the marketing department has spent another 80 million promoting it, creating such a bubble that it’s almost impossible for him to recover it. Oops.

A Box Office from Another World

For now, Deadline is already announcing that the box office for the first weekend is not going to be what is expected, and it will have to settle for -gulp- 35 million dollars in the United States. And if you know anything about box office, you’ll know that it’s not so common to make ten times more over the course of its run. After all, Spielberg is still a summer classic, but it’s not what it used to be. Sadly.

Additionally, the director has three additional problems. The first is the performance of Obsession and Backrooms at the box office, which will steal adult (or at least teenage) moviegoers. The second is Toy Story 5, which premieres the following week and marks the start of the summer blockbuster season. Let’s see how he faces the impossible.

The good part is that it will surely have number 1, especially after Scary Movie drops at the box office rapidly and Masters of the Universe has no chance. It cannot be said that it will console Spielberg if he adds his third consecutive failure, though.
