In a recent interview, the Duffer brothers, creators of the series, commented that, unlike previous seasons, this latest installment is not inspired by a specific classic horror movie. “There wasn’t a definitive reference point this year,” explained Ross Duffer. “Rather, we were looking at all the seasons we’ve done and wondering how to bring this story to a close.” This reflection has led the creative team to return to the fundamentals of the first season, ensuring that the ending feels like a singular and complete narrative.
Likewise, although there is no single cinematic reference, the Duffer brothers have also admitted that there are some references to film throughout the season. “There are movie touchstones, but it’s less definitive this year,” adds Matt Duffer, who emphasizes that the new season is partly an exercise in introspection about what has worked throughout the series.
