2023 was a terrible year for blockbusters, with a dreadful box office for movies from the Marvel and DC universes, only saved by the Barbenheimer that caught us all by surprise. However, there was a movie that, despite also being a small box office failure, won the hearts of everyone who could see it, achieving the respectable score of 91% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as the favor of 93% of the audience at its release.
We are talking about Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, a movie that brought the classic universe of the role-playing game to the big screen with a fun, daring adventure and, above all, with all the spirit of the original game. The movie is, at times, as if you were in front of a game board, and the chemistry between characters works spectacularly.

Netflix has just released it by surprise on its streaming platform, making it a great option for all those who are curious about the movie but were unable to see it during its theatrical run.

A Hilarious Adventure We Weren’t Prepared For
Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the film takes the vast universe of the game and turns it into a story accessible to both original fans and the general audience who simply want to watch a fun fantasy movie. In fact, one of the film’s strengths is its light and fun tone, which achieves a balance between epic action and humor, setting it apart from other films in the genre that tend to take themselves too seriously.
The cast is another of the great successes that make this a great movie. Chris Pine, in the role of the charismatic bard Edgin, leads a group of misfits with undeniable chemistry. Alongside him is Michelle Rodriguez, as the fierce warrior Holga; Justice Smith, a wizard with potential; and Sophia Lillis, who brings mysticism with her shape-shifting druid. Each of the characters has their moment to shine, and the development of their relationships adds an emotional layer that adds depth to the adventure. It’s a kind of Guardians of the Galaxy in a medieval fantasy world. But here, everything works, unlike in Borderlands.

Additionally, its deployment is 100% blockbuster. From the magnificent landscapes and fantastic creatures to the thrilling combat sequences, Honor Among Thieves offers a popcorn visual feast like no other. Furthermore, its clever narrative, filled with nods to the original game, rewards both veterans of Dungeons & Dragons and newcomers alike. Every scene and situation is filled with details that honor the spirit of the game and even classic moments that we all know. It is a full-fledged tribute.
After its unfortunate failure in theaters, the movie has found a new life and a second chance to shine, thanks to its arrival on Netflix. It’s the ideal mix for a weekend marathon, with balanced doses of fantasy, action, and humor that make the more than two-hour duration fly by. If you’re a fan of worlds like The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, but are looking for something less dark and more fun, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the perfect choice.
