App of the Week: Batman Arkham Knight

Our App of the Week this week lets you become the brooding hero of a crime filled city. Donning the mantel of the bat, Batman: Arkham Knight lets you step into the heavily armored bat-boots of Gotham’s greatest hero.

This is developer Rocksteady’s final entry in their Arkham trilogy. It brings an appropriately dark end to the events of the franchise, with Batman having to face his failings while he deals with famous DC super-villains.

If you have played the previous Arkham installments you will know the three gameplay pillars that made this series so popular, all of which return here – exploration, stealth, and vicious combat.

However, the latest game adds a forth element to this mix – the iconic Batmobile. This super-car/tank hybrid has two forms, car and battle, and lets you switch both at the press of a button. Like the rest of the game, this gives you lots of versatility to deal with situations however you choose to.

To ensure that Batman: Arkham Knight is unmissable, it looks sensational – especially if you your PC is beefy enough to turn up all of the graphics settings.

It is the perfect end to one of the most consistently stunning game series of recent years.

Please note, some players have reported issues with the game on PC. We experienced no problems during our testing, but please check the official Warner Bros. blog for updates.

E3 2014: Batman Arkham Knight – the Dark Knight in all his splendour

There’s a fine balance between aesthetic beauty and spectacular action, and Batman Arkham Knight hits it right on the head. This time a true superhero, the Dark Knight returns in this, the star game of E3 2014.

When I entered the demo room the lights were off, and the screening began. While I was thinking about looking for popcorn, the PlayStation symbol appeared on the screen, and I realized that what we were actually witnessing wasn’t a trailer, but a live demo.

Batman Arkham Night is dramatic and theatrical, but the changes between cut and action scenes is completely fluid. It seems to be designed to make the transition as smooth and unnoticeable as possible, and the quality difference between cut scenes and the action itself is barely, if at all, noticeable.

Gameplay is similarly polished. Fights are energetic and entertaining, there are objects that you can use spread around the game and, of course, there’s the Batmobile, without which Batman would be unable to save Gotham City…for the umpteenth time.

A superhero in all his dark splendor

In the live demo at E3, where we also got a chance to play, Rocksteady decided to show level 2 of Batman Arkham Night where Scarecrow appears for the first time. In it, the bad guy had taken possession of Ace Chemicals, a factory where he had taken 5 hostages and was in the process of making a bomb.

Once Batman made it to the factory, he easily made it to the top of the building with the claw and the Batscanner boomerang, which was able to analyze the building to see where the hostages were being kept.

Batman 01

I swooped down, dropping into the ventilation shafts where I was able to move undetected. The first surprise came when I used the new Fear Take Down move, which sends your enemies to the floor with the first shot when you enter into a scene. You do this with R + rotating the camera.

Fighting in Batman Arkham Night strikes a good balance between attack, defense, and counterattack. In the fight I took part in, there were various combos and a spectacular finish that ended in my enemies’ heads getting fried in the electric control station or getting squashed by a giant chandelier.

A puzzle-solver and an armed vehicle: Batman’s essential helper

If KITT and Micheal Knight are best friends, then Batman and the Batmobile are inseparable in Arkham Knight. We’ve heard rumors about the central role of the Batmobile, and after playing for a while, I can definitely confirm our suspicions.

The Batmobile is a tank, and a fireball, as well as a vehicle, and an independent robot. In the level we played, it used Fire Power to ruin whole walls, but also to jump up and land on enemies and, in Battle Mode, to burn things down in a cloak of flames.

Batman 02

The Batmobile’s central role is in solving puzzles and thus allowing us to progress in the game. The vehicle can operate remotely and, in some cases, bump off armed enemies blocking our path or even operate non-functioning elevators to get to other parts of the factory.

Welcome, new generation

In the demo we played, I completed the 2nd level of the game and that, plus exploring a little and some accidental deaths, took around 45 minutes. The game designers who where there explained that the game would have a game area about 5 times larger than Arkham City, and as a whole the game would take longer to complete than its predecessor.

The designers also added that the game we saw is clearly still in alpha version, but they’ve put a lot of effort into finishing. They also pointed out that their aim was to get the most from the power of the next-gen platforms, including the next gen PCs that we played on.

Batman 03

Pre-release version or not, Batman Arkham Night is an impressive game, even just from the point of view of the graphics. The detailed rendering of Batman, the pouring rain and the cinematic cut scenes are all amazing.

If we were waiting to play the new Batman before E3, now that we’ve had a taste, the anticipation is even worse. We’re desperate to get our hands on Batman Arkham Night which is, without a doubt, a truly impressive game.

Batman: Arkham Knight release delayed until 2015

There’s bad news for Batman fans as Rocksteady Studios announced that Batman: Arkham Knight won’t arrive until 2015. The original release date was supposed to be the fall of this year.

Rocksteady and publisher Warner Brothers did not give a reason for delaying the game. A more specific release date will be announced at a later time.

Batman: Arkham Knight joins Watch Dogs as another delayed high-profile game. The recently released Watch Dogs game by Ubisoft was delayed six months to polish the game.

Ubisoft released a new teaser trailer of the game’s Batmobile to tide us over until E3, where more details will be revealed about the game. According to Gameranx, Batman: Arkham Knight will be revealed June 11th from 1:20 to 1:40 PM, Pacific Time, at E3.

Batman Arkham Knight: The Dark Knight bids farewell

The Arkham saga bids us farewell with a unique installment: Batman accompanied by the best of allies, some super-charismatic villains, backed up by all the power of the new generation of consoles.

Rocksteady, creator of Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City returns to the Dark Knight universe to finish what promises to be one of the best trilogies in videogame history. Arkham Knight won’t just be a worthy continuation, it will also herald the arrival of Batman to the new generation of consoles, a visually stunning game with gameplay that will set the bar high for future open-world games.

Rocksteady took three years working on this offering, a period in which Warner Bros decided to create a game in between, Batman Arkham Origins, developed by its headquarters in Montreal. It could have been a disappointment for some, so they wisely opted for a prequel. Closing the saga was an honor left to those who could make it as great as it deserved to be.

Gotham like you’ve never seen it before

Rocksteady promises a land area five times greater than that seen in Arkham City. The map will mainly focus on the center of Gotham, consisting of three islands.

However, it’s not just about size but also about freedom. Sefton Hill, Game Director, explained to Game Informer magazine: “We want to create the largest open world game in history. We want to make an open world that’s more real, vibrant, and dense than has ever been seen before.”

Too ambitious? Perhaps, but Rocksteady’s certainly got all the cards to make a winning move. For starters, the developers use an enhanced version of Unreal Engine which is fully designed for the new generation of consoles, PS4 and Xbox One, and higher-level PCs. This will mean a brutal level of detail in every alley, building, and weather effect you see in Gotham.

To take a few examples: the buildings will be higher, there will be different and recognizable businesses around every corner and despite the city being half deserted, they will be full of life. We know that trouble is never far away in Arkham Knight; there’s always someone who’s itching to to make a killing and there are no shortage of Gotham rebel groups who love to take advantage of the chaos to steal or destroy urban amenities. So don’t be surprised (although you might be a bit alarmed) if you see riots of up to 50 people, something we haven’t seen in the Arkham series to date.

Gotham city has never been so detailled

A year of…peace?

The action in Batman Arkham Knight takes place a year after the end of Batman Arkham City. The Joker, leader of the villains of Gotham, is dead and the city is peaceful. Since there’s little crime in the city, the Dark Knight has little to do, so he’s dedicated the last twelve months to research; designing new devices and suits to prepare for a possible threat…because you never know what might happen.

Good idea, Batman, good idea! Because it turns out that the remaining villains have again joined forces to wreak havoc on Gotham and try to kill Batman again. The first to try is an old acquaintance, the Scarecrow, who starts a plan based on chaos that will soon take over Gotham.

The Scarecrow threatens to launch a fear toxin throughout the city. Faced with this disaster, the authorities, led by Commissioner Gordon, order the evacuation of the entire population, which means that six million people will leave Gotham. With a semi-abandoned city, the Scarecrow and company can do what they wish and, most importantly, they can indulge in their favorite pastime: a macabre game of cat and mouse with the ever-patient Batman.

Batman returns after a year of reflection

A parade of old acquaintances

The Scarecrow isn’t the only villain who has been dropped into the game. Other heavyweights like Penguin, Harley Quinn, Riddler, and Two-Face have been confirmed, but for now we don’t know the role each of these bad guys will play in this new Odyssey of the Dark Knight.

When it comes to the good guys, you won’t be be surprised if I tell you that Commissioner Gordon is on our side again, acting as an accomplice to our missions in Gotham. Also along for the ride is Barbara, Commissioner Gordon’s daughter who, unbeknown to her father, has taken on the role of Oracle, our right hand at headquarters, which will give us plenty of information like access points, enemies’ plans, and much more.

But with the Joker dead, who will direct all the chaos on the streets of Gotham? Apparently this role falls to Scarecrow, but it looks like he is only acting on behalf of a new enemy hiding in the shadows. Who could it be? It’s none other than the Knight of Arkham (hence the title of the game), an opponent specially created for the game and for which Rocksteady has collaborated with DC Comics, because, let’s be honest, creating a new villain for Batman is no small thing. We can’t wait to find out more!

A legendary villian returns to Gotham City

The (almost) perfect hero

As I said, this year of “peace” has helped Batman develop as a hero. Thus, our Batman will have a new suit and improvements to his legendary weapons. Now you can use them all in the air, as well as having more support and better glide with the cape.

His combat skills have also improved, although Rocksteady already had them right. The combat system in the Arkham saga worked fine, so it wasn’t worth making the veteran player dizzy with drastic changes.

New developments in the fight sequences will go through new mechanics, like the ability to use environmental objects as improvised weapons or new combos, but there’s nothing really radical.

Batman has grown into a well-rounded superhero

Batman’s long-awaited ally arrives

These new, but not radical powers hide an ace up their sleeve: Batman’s ultimate ally. No, it’s not Robin, it’s the ever-faithful…Batmobile!

Batman’s car debuts in style in this third installment, presented as a veritable killing machine and the most detailed vehicle we’ve ever seen in a game.

The Batmobile can drive, jump, accelerate, and make incredible turns on its own axis so you can move quickly through the city. In addition, it’s bulletproof and provides the perfect way to eliminate the occasional enemy, either by mowing them down or using the launchers.

The best part is that your Batmobile is always available. Just press a button and the car arrives straight away, no matter where you are.

Although the Batmobile is presented as the ultimate weapon, Rocksteady ensures that you’ll have no shortage of reasons for wanting to use Batman on his own, because often you’ll prefer the lightness and freedom offered by the hero when he’s free from his vehicle. The good thing is, in any case, the choice to use the Batmobile or Batman (either to fight or to move around Gotham) will be yours and yours alone.

Presenting...the Batmobile!

A new standard for the next generation?

As far as we can see, everything in Batman Arkham Knight looks superb and has a great finish worthy of the new generation of consoles. Rocksteady has taken the task of bringing us a real PS4 and Xbox One game seriously; it didn’t settle for a cross-gen title like some of the first games that have been released for these consoles.

Slated for release in autumn 2014, Batman Arkham Knight at least allows us to forget the bad taste that Arkham Origins left in our mouths: although entertaining, this offering was far from the level of Rocksteady’s other 2 games in the series.

Batman: Arkham Knight announced for PC and next-gen consoles

The next installment in the Batman video game series has been announced. Batman: Arkham Knight will be arriving on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this year, though no specific date was given.

Rocksteady Studios is back for its final installment in the Batman Arkham series. The studio was responsible for the first two Batman Arkham games, which were both universally loved.

From the trailer, the usual suspects are all there: Two-Face, Harley Quinn, and Oswald Cobblepot. We also get a glimpse of the new Batmobile. Batman: Arkham Knight will apparently feature a larger emphasis on driving than previous games in the series.
