Dev releases day one patch ahead of God of War: Ragnarok release

God of War: Ragnarok releases on the 9th of November, and already, the game has a day one patch that the developer ‘strongly encourages’ to download. Santa Monica Studio released the detailed day one patch ahead of the game’s highly-anticipated launch, and the update is quite extensive. Included in the update are almost 200 fixes to the unreleased game.

These fixes extend to gameplay, cinematics, performance, dialogue, UI, and many more. The dialogue adjustments are the most compelling as the developers say they ‘make conversations sound more natural.’ The game has also gained a much more stable frame rate, and the instances of crashing have been drastically reduced. The team also issued a fix aimed at PS5 players, which adds ‘additional tuning and coverage for DualSense controller haptics.’ Having extra support for peripherals is never a bad thing.

Day one patches sometimes create the impression that a game isn’t as good as it could be upon launch. In reality, day-one patches have come to represent a method that developers use to ensure the quality of their product. In the case of God of War: Ragnarok, there doesn’t seem to have been anything game-breaking about the title. These are primarily fixes that ultimately make the game more realistic and result in a more natural and organic type of gameplay.

You’ll likely have heard the term zero-day patch as well. This is something completely different, and we usually use this terminology when we talk about software giants like Microsoft or Alphabet. Zero-day patches are fixes issued to combat the situation that arises when vulnerabilities are leaked or exploited before the vendor in charge has been able to issue a patch that repairs the flaw.

Zero-day patches often cost companies millions, while day-one patches are issued before a piece of software even hits the shelf, thereby offsetting the likelihood that the flaw will be exploited or even be present when the software launches.

We’ve written quite a good deal about this game at this point. Earlier this week, we even wrote a piece about what the critics have said about God of War: Ragnarok. Once you’ve read the comments, why not read our dynamite tactics to survive?

In this article, we’ll look at some of the God of War’s best fighting tactics to survive Ragnarok.

How long does God of War: Ragnarok take to beat?

Reviewers who’ve been lucky enough to test-play God of War: Ragnarok say that if you simply follow the story’s narrative and focus on the main quest, the game will keep you busy for about 35 hours.

However, there are many different side quests that can quickly distract from the main storyline, meaning that the best estimate is that the game will take approximately 40 hours to complete. Also, you’ll spend plenty of time enjoying the view with the outstanding graphics in God of War: Ragnarok.

Is God of War ending with Ragnarok?

God of War: Ragnarok is the finale of the Norse era of the series. So far, no other games have been confirmed. Still, Cory Barlog, the Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio who’s been involved in both installments of God of War, has said that the series could possibly tackle either Egyptian or Mayan mythology.

9 Best fighting tactics in God of War: Ragnarok

Although the combat system has improved, some of the basics remain the same. Players should still focus on gaining experience and improving their skills. When improving your skills, make sure that the skills you choose fit in with your game-playing style. For example, if you’re good at parrying, you might want to focus on the quick reflexes skill.

Now let’s have a look at some of the best fighting strategies to beat God of War: Ragnarok.

Don’t underestimate parrying

Parrying plays an important part in many of the fights, especially the more difficult ones, throughout God of War: Ragnarok. As such, it’s a worthwhile investment to learn how to perfectly time your parry. You want to raise your shield just as the attack is about to land. When timing this perfectly, it will make the enemy stagger back, cause damage and give you time to launch a counterattack.

Tip: If the parry isn’t for you, you can still beat the game. Just make sure to invest in the right protective skills when blocking to limit the damage taken. In this situation, you’ll want to focus your shield skill on a more tank-like destiny. Learning how to parry just makes certain fights a little easier, and if you choose to follow this shield destiny, it can become quite useful.

Use roll-on rails when necessary

A dodge roll can be very useful if you’re not good at the parry, if you’re being attacked from behind, or if your enemy is using an attack that can’t be blocked. You can use it repeatedly to dodge attacks from powerful enemies while biding your time to launch your own attack.

Use dodges strategically

Sometimes you might not want to get too far away from the enemy, and in this case, a regular dodge may be better. You can even combine the dodge with your shield up to limit the amount of damage, and you’re still close enough to the enemy to return with a combo or runic attack.

Use your environment

God of War: Ragnarok has created an ideal environment for battles – so make use of it. If enemies are swarming you, it might be easier to knock some of them off a cliff rather than battle each one. Or you can use the environment to dodge incoming projectiles or to lure enemies into a trap. You can also use the environment to launch powerful attacks by jumping into enemies from above.

Make use of Atreus

While we expect new moves for both Kratos and Atreus, Atreus will no doubt have a much more active role in Ragnarok since he’s older. As such, it’s important not to forget about him. Arrows from Atreus can stun enemies, giving you a chance to launch a strong attack with Kratos. While his stun arrows are very useful, there sure to be more interesting moves from him.

Speed is key

Focus on speed, as it’s an important aspect of the game. When confronted with a group of enemies, get in, knock ’em down and get out. If you can deal with the weaker enemies faster, it’ll give you more time to prepare and deal with the stronger ones.

Take enemies out in an order

In some battles, you’ll find it’s easier to take out enemies in an order. For example, taking out projectile enemies first will make the rest of the fight progress easier as you’re not dealing with launched attacks such as arrows. The same goes for faster enemies; take them down before moving on to the slower but stronger foes. Leave the strongest for last, and try not to damage them until you’re ready; otherwise, they can rank up before you’re ready for them.

Use Spartan Rage at the right time

Spartan Rage can be a useful skill when used appropriately. When you use it, it’ll give Kratos a health boost. As such, using it when you’re at full health will be a waste. It’s better to save it for when your health is low.

Don’t underestimate light runic attacks for crowd control

Light runic attacks are great for crowd control. Use one of these skills that affect multiple enemies at the same time when you feel crowded. Save your heavy runic attacks to beat down stronger enemies.

Beat the odds and prevent Ragnarok

There will be many different enemies waiting for Kratos and Atreus in God of War: Ragnarok. From electric-crocodiles known as Dreki to double-sword wielding Light Elves, and add in the occasion God, you can rest assured that combat skills and strategies will be important. Use our above tactics to help you navigate the new combat system and walk away from your fights victoriously.

God of War: Ragnarok – How does real-life Norse mythology compare?

We’re nearing the end of Kratos’ journey into the depths of Norse mythology. From what we can tell, the trailer for the upcoming ninth installment in God of War: Ragnarok paints the picture of the Norse gods still being essential to the game’s plot line. This, of course, is good news for anyone who has been enjoying the Norse aspect of the series. However, with the story nearing its conclusion, it’s probably a good time to discuss how accurately the mythology aspect of the series has been portrayed.

God of War Ragnarök DOWNLOAD

In the following article, we’ll examine what aspects of real Norse mythology the series has retained and in what ways the games have deviated from the mythological stories. We’ll also take a brief look at other games that tell the story of the Norse deities and see how God of War stacks up against them. Without any further ado, let’s make like the god of thunder and get ready to rumble, shall we?

The issue with mythology

Mythology is a slightly tricky subject because there are so many aspects and accounts to consider. For instance, Norse mythology is the widely accepted term for stories pertaining to the old religions of the Nordic or Scandinavian Germanic people. Even among this Northern tribe of Europeans, there are differing accounts where mythology is concerned. For instance, some believe that Nordic mythologies should reflect as many as 66 main deity figures, while others recognize only 12 as part of the proposed Norse canon.

Since Nordic mythology has no definitive canon, we shall rely on the Prose Edda written by Snorri Sturluson, an Icelandic poet, historian, and chieftain. Four known manuscripts (and three fragments), collectively referred to as the Prose Edda, which he completed sometime between 1222 and 1223, exist as the most complete and comprehensive literary exploration of the mythologies of the Scandinavian Germanic peoples.

Side note: If you want to learn more about Norse mythology, the Prose Edda is the best place to start. Once you’ve built a framework with the Prose Edda, you may want also to read the Poetic Edda. This collection has a more structured use of language but relies on the foundation of the former collection to paint the most complete picture of the ancient Nordic religions and beliefs within which Norse mythology is grounded.

Where mythology and God of War: Ragnarok disagree

Before we start, it’s important to remember that God of War, rather brilliantly, introduces us to Norse mythology from the giants’ perspective. Therefore, creative license is warranted as the deities and situations described in GoW can be considered retellings of what the giants experienced, not what the ancient Nordic people believed or wrote about, as in the Eddas.

The first major difference between actual mythology and GoW is that in the Eddas, there’s no mention of any Greek god going on a blood-soaked rampage against the Nordic deities. This is because these are different traditions, and Norse mythology already has its own God of War, Týr. Although, according to the Eddas mentioned above, Týr is the god of heroic glory and law.

He is, however, believed to be the god of war due to his being associated with the same day as Mars, the Roman god of war, Tuesday.  Additionally, many scholars believe the deities in the different mythologies across the world to be local expressions of the same forces, influenced heavily by the developed culture. For instance, for every Thor, you have a Zeus in Greece and a Jupiter in Rome.

The second major difference is that Kratos is not a god in any mythology. According to Greek tradition, Kratos is the personification of strength. He is widely seen as the son of Pallas and Styx, not the demi-god son of Zeus, as in the GoW canon.

God of War: Ragnarok and Norse mythology also disagree about the presence of tattoos or body marking of any kind. Ancient Nordic tradition says nothing about the gods having tattoos. In fact, it doesn’t say much at all about the actual appearance of the deities. The most we get from the actual texts is that Thor has red hair and that Odin is an old, one-eyed man. However, it isn’t completely outside of the realm of possibility that at least one retelling doesn’t mention tattoos. The technology did exist at the time. In fact, even centuries before, the Mayans had tattoos. They even had their own god of tattoos, Acat.

Other games that feature the Norse gods

There are a ton of games out there that deal with Norse mythology in some way, shape, or form. We’ll briefly discuss a few key players below, whether they honor the mythologies or disregard them, and thus, how they stack up to God of War: Ragnarok.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla shares the spot of greatest mythology-inspired game in history with God of War. Of course, such greatness cannot be achieved by merely sticking to the facts, or in this case, the myths. Instead, AC: Valhalla draws inspiration from Norse mythology while retaining its own identity as a fictional adventure experience.

However, the mythological and cultural details in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla are some of the deepest researched and most accurate in the industry. We won’t go into too many details about the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Suffice it to say that the gods and situations described in AC are nothing short of incredible.

AC Valhalla

Skyrim

Skyrim is very clearly based on both Roman and Norse mythology. However, the game doesn’t have to be historically accurate because it was created as pure high fantasy and is simply inspired by real history and traditions. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that while the deities of the Divines and the Aetherium are based on mythological figures, they do not share their names or characteristics exactly.

It would, therefore, be pointless to discuss the inaccuracies portrayed in the game because accuracy was never the end goal. The end goal is and has always been to create an earth-like environment completely suspended in the most-vaulted heights of high fantasy.

Skyrim

Valheim

Valheim’s name is already a deviation from the Prose and Poetic Eddas. In the game, Valheim is the tenth realm of the Yggdrasil. Yggdrasil here refers to the mythical Nordic ash tree at the center of existence. Interestingly, the tree isn’t necessarily an ash tree, as the word yggia means yew. Yew is another type of tree widely regarded to be one of the most spiritually significant trees in existence. Around the tree exist the nine realms of reality. These realms are:

  • Niflheim
  • Muspelheim
  • Asgard
  • Midgard
  • Jotunheim
  • Vanaheim
  • Alfheim
  • Svartalfheim
  • Helheim

You’ll notice that Valheim, the supposed Norse equivalent of purgatory when Odin sends his prisoners, does not appear on the list. This list is unofficial canon due to its extensive presence in both the Prose and Poetic Eddas. According to the Eddas, the mythical Nordic equivalent to purgatory is actually Helheim.

There’s disagreement within the mythological community, though, whether it should really be called Helheim, as heim traditionally means home. The full word thus means the home of Hell. Alternately, the Edda may simply term purgatory as Hel.

Valheim

Creative license that honors mythology

There is no greater honorific than having your culture’s stories told even centuries after the ancient strongholds have turned into sprawling metropolitan cities. This is what we see in games like God of War. These games not only tell compelling stories and provide players with years worth of gameplay. They also seek to inform and educate current generations of the glory of the ancient tribes of man whose cultures they honor.

While these games typically contain a generous dose of creative license to tell a story better, or more convincingly, or to add an air of high fantasy, games like God of War will go down in history as being the most accurate representations of the mythologies, cultures, and beliefs of our planets most ancient tribes.

God of War: Ragnarök – What the critics are saying

Mythology, combat, and a heart-wrenching story. Could we possibly have asked more of the next iteration in the God of War franchise? If you ask me, no. But the cultured and infinitely more experienced team at Metro GameCentral would like you to know that the game is a ‘more flawed experience than its predecessor.’ You’ll find the rest of his opinions and more in this exploration of what the critics think of God of War: Ragnarök.

God of War Ragnarök DOWNLOAD

The critics, as you’ve seen by the comment above, are not afraid to pull their punches. However, as we’ll point out, not everyone is as critical of the game. In fact, many critics have given the game a solid 8 out of 10. 99% of the critics recognized by OpenCritic recommend the game, and its Top Critic Average is a near-perfect 94.

Simon Cardy of IGN says that the game is ‘an enthralling spectacle to behold and an even more exciting one to take the reins of, God of War Ragnarök melds action and adventure together to create a new, unforgettable Norse saga.’ He adds further that it is ‘a complete work of art from top to bottom.’

Chris Tapsell of Eurogamer says it best with his comment. ‘Much like its heroes, God of War: Ragnarök learns to love itself for what it truly is: gargantuan, excessive, and wonderfully absurd.’

You’ll have to read David Jenkins’ full review to discover how much he actually enjoyed the game. Just like he asserts Kratos’ personality thaws as the the game progresses, so too does Jenkins’ opinion once you delve into his full critique.

The most interesting review comes from James Billcliffe of VG247. He asserts that ‘Although it starts out remarkably similar to the 2018 God of War both mechanically and graphically, God of War Ragnarök gradually builds into a meaningful evolution for the series, expanding the scope of gameplay both stealthily and overtly, while delivering a tense and twisty story that bends legend around its characters in exciting and endlessly interesting ways.’

God of War Ragnarok critics 2

In short, the game seems to be a massive hit among those who have had a chance to play it ahead of its global console launch on November 8th.
In other news, Sony has revealed brand new graphics modes for God of War: Ragnarök on PlayStation 4 and 5.

Sony reveals new graphics modes for God of War: Ragnarok

God of War: Ragnarok is set to release soon, on the 9th of November 2022. In preparation for the PS4 and PS5 releases, Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed brand new graphics modes for both consoles.

God of War Ragnarök DOWNLOAD

Unfortunately, if you have a standard PS4, you’re up a creek without a paddle. You’ll only be able to play GoW: Ragnarok in standard mode; 1080p hoping to reach 30 FPS. With the PS4 Pro, you have more options as you’ll be able to aim as high as 1656p and unlocked 30 FPS. This means that you’ll be able to run the game at frame rates higher than 30. If you opt for quality over performance, you’ll be drifting around 1440p.

However, should you have the next-gen PS5 console, you’ve got more options than you’ll know what to do with. Here, you’ll be able to maximize performance and soar at 4K resolution and 60 FPS. Or, you can favor quality and still run the game at 4K while attaining around 30 FPS.

You’ve also got the option to favor performance and a higher frame rate (HFR) which will see you running the game at around 1440p and 60 FPS or higher. Then there’s the option to favor performance, HFR, and variable refresh rate (VRR), but that largely produces the same results as above.

There’s no indication of what graphics modes will be hitting the PC version of the game when it arrives, but we can assume it’ll be on par with that of the PS5 or a little below. The issue with PC gaming, though, is that it requires a higher capital outlay on the player’s part to achieve the same performance. To achieve a comparable performance from a PC, you need to consider the price of the graphics card, which should be at least equivalent to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060.

Sony reveals new graphics modes for God of War Ragnarok

You also need to think about the RAM sticks, hard drive, motherboard, higher-end screen, cooling system, power supply and electrical costs, and processor. All of these components need to be able to support the weight of your desired graphics mode, which comes at quite a premium. Therefore, it’s cheaper to invest in a console.

God of War: Ragnarok – Armor system upgrade, game leak and unique trailer

With just a few days before its release, God of War: Ragnarok has already been making headlines. As one of the most anticipated games of 2022, fans have been patiently looking forward to its release on November 9th, but there have been a few unsuspected surprises along the way.

God of War Ragnarök DOWNLOAD

The first was the unfortunate game leak that will have many fans avoiding social media over the next few weeks. While the game is only set to be officially released next week, a particular retailer jumped the gun and shipped copies of pre-ordered games ahead of schedule.

This means that the game is already out in the open, and social media might already be flooded with gameplay footage. So, if you want to enjoy the game fresh without any spoilers, you might want to steer clear of social media for a while. The developers, Santa Monica Studio, are notably upset by this unsuspected leak and have taken to Twitter to apologize to fans and vent their own frustrations at the situation.

In other news, the game’s combat design lead, Mihir Sheth, revealed that an armor transmogrification system will be introduced in God of War: Ragnarok. This means players can equip armor with unique perks and bonuses and change it to make Kratos look the way they want.

This is becoming a popular request across RPG games and has already been implemented in games like Marvel’s Spiderman and Cyberpunk 2077. Although we don’t know exactly how this feature will work, it’s great to know that there will be a way to give your armor a more personalized twist while still keeping the perks.

The newest quirky official trailer featuring Ben Stiller, John Travolta and LeBron James is enough to keep us entertained while we count down the last few days to the release. This will be the final entry in Kratos’s journey through Norse mythology. We saw how vital the lore of a game is with Elden Ring, and we hope the developers got it right with God of War: Ragnarok.
