If you want to have everything ‘Star Citizen’, it will cost you two years’ salary. Is it worth it?

From August 2013 until now, the game has been gradually revealing itself, but there is still no definitive version or a date for when it will be released. However, you can certainly spend money on it abundantly.

The development of ‘Star Citizen‘ started in 2011, and we are still waiting for it to be fully released. Twelve years later, it has become the most expensive game in history, having raised over 600 million dollars through crowdfunding. From August 2013 until now, the game has been gradually revealed, but there is still no definitive version or a date for its release. However, you can certainly spend money on it.

Burn money!

There is no month without a controversy about ‘Star Citizen’ and its, let’s call it, business model. It used to be because you had to pay even to watch the CitizenCon from your home (yes, it has its own annual conference) and now because they have announced how much the new pack with all the game’s ships will cost. All of them. The expensive ones, the cheap ones… all the DLC prepared for you in a possibly infinite game for the modest price of $48,000.

And you might be thinking “Did they miss a zero, right?”. But no. If you’re really interested, go ahead and empty your bank account, you’ll know if it’s worth it. The pack is called Legatus Ship and it contains all the ships (175) and their upgrades: in their defense, it must be said that they have been releasing this pack since 2021, always with the relevant updates, and this year it costs 6000 more than last year. Nothing, just a few bucks.

But if you have decided to make the best of a bad situation and a $60 ship is not enough to start moving around in space, wait: you can’t afford it even if you have the money ready. And that’s because, to get this DLC, you have to be part of the Presidents Club, which can be accessed by paying an additional $1000. For almost $50,000 personally, I can think of many other things to do besides buying fake ships for an unfinished video game, but to each their own…

Has the development of the most anticipated video game of the decade finished? It seems so, but there’s a catch

Squadron 42, the single-player element of Star Citizen that features a celebrity cast, enters its final “polishing phase”

Space games are incredibly popular, and when one is announced, the community reacts very positively. That happened with Star Citizen, a spaceship and space life simulator that has raised more than 500 million dollars over a decade of development.

The single-player campaign of Star Citizen showcased a star-studded trailer back in 2018, featuring renowned actors like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, and Liam Cunningham. Since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating this space opera.

However, its creator, Chris Roberts, claims that the game is already complete and has entered the polishing phase. Can we then say that Star Citizen is finished?

The campaign of the most anticipated game in the world is finished

After its grand trailer presentation five years ago, the developer Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) announced that Squadron 42 would be released in the summer of 2020, but as we know, that never happened. In the same year, its creator, Chris Roberts, stated that the game would be “finished when it’s finished.”

Let’s fast forward to January 2022, when Roberts confirmed that Squadron 42 was still one or two years away. Now, in October 2023, Chris Roberts has announced that the game’s campaign is finished; they are only in the final phase: polishing.

In addition to the mentioned actors, Squadron 42 also features John Rhys-Davies (Gimli from The Lord of the Rings), Mark Strong from Kingsman (who also voiced Captain Titus in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine), Ben Mendelsohn from Secret Invasion, and the ultimate geek king, Henry Cavill.

The actors completed their motion capture and voice recording back in 2015, so they have waited a long time to see the final product.

The nearly half-hour-long video showcases various elements of Squadron 42, including cinematics featuring some of the aforementioned Hollywood stars.

The big question now is when they will release Squadron 42 and whether the long wait will have been worth it. Roberts stated that those eager to play the game will be the first to know once the release date is set, “and we want to make sure Squadron 42 fulfills the promise of being this generation’s Wing Commander.”

Star Citizen raises over $500 million with Crowdfunding

Star Citizen is an in-development space exploration, combat, and trading title by Cloud Imperium. Star Citizen entered pre-production in 2010 and officially entered production using CryEngine 3 in 2010. It has been more than a decade since, and we’ve seen no tangible release date announced. However, some good news comes in the form of more than $500 million that has been raised for the game through crowdfunding.

Just for reference, the game has been in development for so long that it’s changed game engines. Star Citizen is currently being developed on Amazon Lumberyard – no longer CryEngine 3. CryEngine 3 is no longer even current. Crytek’s latest iteration of its AAA game engine is CryEngine 5.7. However, although the game has taken more than a decade to develop and still isn’t in a state where it can be released, donations keep pouring in, and backers keep backing its development.

As of the writing of this article, Cloud Imperium has raised $500,075,150. This crowdfunding phenomenon started in 2012 with a successful Kickstarter that raised $2 million. From there, the crowdfunding campaign intensified and snowballed until November 2021, when the company reached $400 million. That means that it took just a little under a year for the company to generate a further $100 million.

Let’s just reiterate that we still haven’t seen any hint of a final release date for Star Citizen. However, the game’s development is being led by Chris Roberts, and this isn’t his first foray into the gaming industry, or even space exploration simulators. Star Citizen is a sort of extended retry of the plans that Cloud Imperium had for another of Robert’s games; Freelancer.

Freelancer is a similar space combat and exploration simulation title that was published in 2003, and is, itself, a chronological sequel to 2000’s game of the same type, Starlancer. The latter also being a product of Chris Roberts. Clearly, this man knows how to negotiate space-based gameplay, with his prior experiences garnering much public attention.

Hopefully, we’ll soon see something more concrete than trailers and previews of what Star Citizen will be like when it eventually releases.
