When Stupidity Turns Dangerous: Light Bulb Challenge Sends Participants to Hospital

The result? A lousy time in the hospital that could have ended tragically. Impossible to read this story without thinking “This man is stupid.”

If extraterrestrials were to truly observe us, they would undoubtedly perceive us as an inferior species. And as evidence, here’s a case in point: the story of a man in China who did the most foolish thing you can imagine because a video told him not to do it under any circumstances. The outcome? A terrible time in the hospital that could have ended tragically. It’s impossible to read this story without thinking, “This man is foolish.”

The light bulb went on

Chen, that’s the name of the ingenious mind, saw a video on Facebook (where else?) that claimed if you put a light bulb in your mouth (with the glass part inward), you won’t be able to open it and it will get stuck. The man thought, “Well, let’s see if it’s true,” grabbed a light bulb, and without hesitation, put it in his mouth and clenched his teeth.

Oh, what a surprise: It was true! Chen couldn’t open his mouth, and only a part of the socket was visible outside. He tried various ways to force it open, but to his astonishment, he couldn’t remove it or swallow anything during that time. He also couldn’t move his body or head much because the light bulb would shatter and, well, kill him. A very intelligent decision, indeed.

The man ended up calling the fire department, who probably hadn’t seen such foolishness in their lives. Before making things worse, they took him to see a doctor in Zhejiang who slowly opened his mouth and managed to remove the light bulb after two hours of the most preventable and absurd agony you can imagine.

We’ll explain what happened, but really, there’s no need for you to try this at home: the light bulb is easy to insert because the mouth is relaxed, but when you try to remove it, it tightens and the teeth get in the way. You know that when something tells you “Don’t do it,” your first natural thought is, well, to do it. Human irrationality, I suppose.
