Ferrari has officially announced a delay in the launch of its second electric vehicle (EV) by at least two years, attributing the decision to a lack of demand for luxury electric sports cars.
Despite initially planning for a release as early as next year, industry insiders state that realistic consumer interest remains sluggish, with one source indicating that “real, sustainable demand is non-existent for an electric sports car.” As a result, the new Ferrari EV is now not expected to arrive before 2028.
In stark contrast, BYD is making significant strides in the electric luxury market with the launch of its Yangwang U7 sedan.
Ferrari’s Electric Dream Postponed: Will BYD Set the New Standard?
This powerhouse boasts nearly 1,300 horsepower from four electric motors and features a robust 135.5 kWh battery, offering an impressive range of approximately 720 km (about 450 miles).
The U7’s remarkable acceleration allows it to go from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, showcasing BYD’s capabilities in the luxury segment.
The Yangwang U7 also integrates advanced technology with a comprehensive suite of smart features, including BYD’s “God’s Eye A” Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that utilizes multiple sensors for enhanced safety and navigation. Inside, the vehicle is designed for a premium experience, featuring multiple screens designed to engage both front and rear passengers.
Priced at 628,000 yuan (around $87,000), the U7 presents a competitive alternative to Ferrari’s forthcoming EV, which is projected to start at over 500,000 euros (more than $500,000).
This price disparity, along with BYD’s initial success—having already sold over 200,000 SU7 models in less than a year—begs the question: Can luxury electric sports cars flourish, or does Ferrari’s skepticism hold true?
As the market evolves, all eyes will be on upcoming sales data to see which brand will emerge as a leader in this innovative terrain.
