Brandon Sanderson, a renowned fantasy author, is currently in talks with several AAA studios to develop a video game based on his successful Mistborn series, after years of waiting due to rights conflicts. In his recent blog entry “State of the Sanderson,” Sanderson expressed his optimism about the possibility that this project is finally taking shape. For over a decade, the idea of adapting Mistborn into a video game has generated interest, but until now it had been restricted by film licensing.
Sanderson has always been very fond of video games
The writer revealed that the project is in the pitching phase, where potential adaptations are discussed with different developers. “I have started to receive real interest in the video game space, and I feel that we are in a stable position to make a Mistborn game a reality,” Sanderson commented. Additionally, the author has emphasized the need to maintain control over the video game rights, in contrast to previous obstacles that hindered progress due to the film rights of Mistborn.
It is worth remembering that in the past, there was an attempt to develop a video game titled Mistborn: Birthright, which, unfortunately, was canceled after several years of development in the early 2010s. This failed project had been conceived as a role-playing game with action elements, focused on a prequel story to the books.
Despite the fact that no specific details have been revealed about the direction the new project might take, Sanderson has expressed a strong desire to move forward and create a gaming experience that captures the essence of his work. “If you are someone who makes decisions at a AAA studio, or a major independent studio, and you have always wanted to create a Mistborn or Stormlight game… it would be wise to contact my representatives now,” the author concluded, showing his determination to bring his vision to the world of video games.
