One of the most iconic animated movies will have a prequel, but not as you expect

Independent filmmaker Joey Lever is working on a short film titled Littlefoot, which will pay homage to the classic animated film The Land Before Time, directed by Don Bluth. The independent filmmaker Joey Lever is working on a short film titled Littlefoot, which will pay tribute to the animated classic The Land Before Time, directed by Don Bluth. This project aims to recreate iconic moments from the original film, which, although it did not achieve the massive success of other productions of the time, such as The Lion King, left an indelible mark on the collective memory of a generation, including adults who grew up watching it.

Ready to cry?

Littlefoot will be a short film of approximately 15 minutes, developed with a 3D animation approach reminiscent of Pixar productions. Lever is committed to moving away from the photorealism of other recent adaptations to offer a style with atmospheric touches, including dynamic settings filled with smoke and dust, and a character design that manages to convey deep emotions. This approach, he says, is crucial to capturing the raw and emotional essence of the original story.

Lever argues that the narrative of The Land Before Time is “silently powerful” and that new generations may not have had the opportunity to see it. In a landscape where remakes are common, he defends that there are some stories that truly deserve to be revived, and this is one of them. This is supported by the fact that the original film led to a series of sequels that never managed to match its quality.

The short film is an independent project, made without a large budget by a small team. Currently, there is no release date announced, but a brief teaser has been shared to provide a glimpse of what to expect. In times of constant remakes, Lever’s proposal seems to seek a genuine connection with the legacy of the story that has moved its audience so much.
