The acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola, a multiple Oscar winner known for classics like The Godfather and its sequel, The Godfather II, recently faced his greatest challenge with the premiere of Megalopolis. After four decades of development, his ambitious work, starring Adam Driver and Giancarlo Esposito, was officially presented at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 2024. However, the film was poorly received, leading to a box office gross of only 14 million dollars against a budget of 120 million, largely financed by Coppola himself after selling part of his vineyards.
It will try to monetize it through other means
The reviews have been overwhelmingly unfavorable, being described by some experts as “a disaster after another.” Despite the commercial and critical failure, Coppola continues to showcase his work with pride. Recently, he attended a screening of Megalopolis at the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey, as part of a presentation tour aimed at highlighting cinematic experiences.
“I didn’t put the movie up for sale anywhere because I wanted to keep alive the hope for a cinematic experience,” commented the director, who hopes to revive interest in his film through in-person events that include discussions about his work and the future of cinema.
At 86 years old, Coppola is now facing the difficult task of financing his next project, Glimpses of the Moon, a musical inspired by Edith Wharton’s novel. Although the script is ready, the lack of funds after the failure of Megalopolis has led him to seek traditional investment in Hollywood, something that has become complicated. “Financially, it’s a bit complicated,” Coppola admitted, hinting that the search for investors willing to take risks is more challenging than ever.
