The game you need for Halloween is made in Paint and is inspired by Junji Ito

If you don’t know what to play for Halloween, you don’t have to worry: we have discovered the perfect game that will keep you glued to the screen for hours

October is the month of terror and there is little that can be done to stop it from being so. Halloween has conquered our hearts and to pretend it hasn’t would be not only absurd, but a bit irresponsible. Not when it’s fun and also allows us to talk about something we really like: scary stuff. Because also, last October 19, a video game was released that has the potential to be the perfect game to spend this Halloween. A game called World of Horror.

Developed by panstasz, a Polish developer who is also a part-time dentist, the game has many peculiarities to attract attention. Inspired by the RPGs of the late 80s, the aesthetics of the games of a computer virtually unknown outside Japan as the PC-88 and the manga of Junji Ito, the game may seem a priori a very strange and incomprehensible mixture. But don’t be fooled. A first look at the game will sell it to you completely.

In World of Horror we start by playing as a teenage boy or girl who has to investigate a series of strange cases that are happening in their town, hoping that they have some kind of relationship with each other. At the end of each of them there is some kind of supernatural threat involved, although we won’t necessarily have to fight every time. Investigating carefully and using our resources properly will allow us to solve cases efficiently without having to put our bodies on the front lines. Something very important in this game.

Because if World of Horror is one thing, it’s hardcore. Not for nothing, it’s a roguelite. Every time we start, a new set of investigations and a new character are generated. Of course, there are also specific scenarios. Mods created by the community. More contained experiences designed for players who want a more guided experience. But that does not detract from the existence of this more open and, potentially, infinite main experience.

All this, moreover, in a gloomy game, with excellent designs and yes, all made with MS Paint. An absolutely amazing merit for a game that, although it can become a bit dour at the beginning, rewards the perseverance of the players with an absolutely fantastic experience. A different horror game perfect for these dates.

Junji Ito’s World Unleashed: New Anime Realizes the Horror Icon’s Vision!

The Uzumaki anime has a new trailer that shows us that this may indeed be the definitive adaptation of the manga.

Junji Ito has had many anime adaptations. None of them have managed to capture the unique essence of his artwork. This is quite normal because, while anime involves the art of economizing resources and doing more with less, Junji Ito’s drawings are the exact opposite—characterized by an extensive use of individual lines and details. His style clashes with the typical anime aesthetics. Therefore, an anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s work that aims to stay true to the original must appear as dissimilar as possible from what is conventionally seen in anime.

That’s the case with “Uzumaki,” the anime adaptation of Junji Ito’s manga of the same name, which showcased two and a half minutes of footage during ComicCon, presented by Adult Swim. The anime features an extremely detailed, black-and-white art style. Behind its creation are Studio Drive and Studio Akatsuki, two relatively small and lesser-known studios, although Studio Drive gained recognition for its successful work on the second season of “To Your Eternity.” The director, Hiroshi Nagahama, is not new to the industry, having previously worked on the cult classic “Mushishi,” which shares certain tonal elements with “Uzumaki,” though not necessarily in its most terrifying or distressing aspects.

For those unfamiliar with it, “Uzumaki” is a manga by Junji Ito set in Kurouzu, a small town in Japan enveloped by a mysterious fog. According to Shuichi Saito, the town is cursed by a spiral pattern, slowly engulfing its inhabitants. Despite witnessing strange occurrences, no one believes Saito, dismissing him as crazy, except for his girlfriend, Kirie Goshima, who stands by his side throughout. Eventually, Kirie becomes the protagonist of the story as she refuses to flee from Kurouzu, choosing to confront the eerie spiral phenomenon.

Sinister, dark, and likely one of Junji Ito’s finest works, “Uzumaki” is set to premiere in 2023, but an exact release date is yet to be announced. What we do know is that it will consist of four episodes, and based on what we’ve seen in the trailer, it appears to be the most faithful adaptation of this renowned mangaka’s work to date.
