Netflix continues its search for a cinematic franchise with lasting impact, a goal that has so far eluded the platform. After attempts like Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon, which failed to resonate with audiences, the company has decided to bet on an adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia, the famous series by C.S. Lewis. The adaptation will begin with The Magician’s Nephew, a move that marks a strategic shift in the narrative, as unlike Disney’s films, which followed the publication order of the books, this time the story of the creation of Narnia will be addressed chronologically.
One of the great stories of fantasy literature
Directed by Greta Gerwig, known for her work on Lady Bird and Little Women, the adaptation promises a fresh take on the source material. Carey Mulligan has been confirmed for a minor role, playing Mabel Kirke, the mother of the protagonist Digory. Although Mulligan’s role appears to be relatively small, her casting as part of the ensemble indicates Netflix’s seriousness in selecting renowned actors, as Mabel, in the book, is mostly ill and is portrayed as a character who, at the end of the story, is healed by her son.
The cast is completed with high-profile stars, such as Daniel Craig, who will play Uncle Andrew, actress Meryl Streep as the lion Aslan, and Emma Mackey as the evil Jadis, the White Witch. Gerwig will not only write and direct the first film, but she also has plans for a second installment. The first film is scheduled for release in late 2026 and will have an exclusive release window in IMAX.
With a combination of a legendary source material and a proven director, Netflix seems to be taking the adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia very seriously. This ambitious project could mark a new chapter for the company in its quest for success in film, and it remains to be seen how the involvement of other stars in the project will unfold.
