Rockstar Games has once again captured the public’s attention by suggesting that it might be developing an enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto IV, originally released in 2008. According to close sources, the remaster could be aimed at consoles like PS4 and Nintendo Switch, expanding the classic’s access to a potential 300 million users. This move follows the company’s trend, which had previously remastered iconic titles like Red Dead Redemption.

GTA 4 is one of the most beloved titles in the franchise

The possibility of this new release seems to have been motivated by the recent removal of the Liberty City Preservation Project mod, which offered an enhanced version of GTA IV without official support from Rockstar. The decision to withdraw this unofficial content may indicate that the company is looking to launch its own remastered version, in order to ensure commercial success and prevent the quality of the mod from cannibalizing sales of its official product.

In parallel, Rockstar has set the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI for May 26, 2026. The anticipation for this title is immense and it is expected to set new sales records, especially as the video game market adapts to prices exceeding 100 euros. This could be a crucial factor in the development of its marketing and distribution.

In addition to GTA IV, there are rumors about a possible remastering of Max Payne 3, which has generated even more anticipation among fans. Although Rockstar has historically been reluctant to touch its classics, the growing market acceptance of high-priced video games could be leading the company to reconsider its approach. With several projects underway and the promise of a GTA VI that has the potential to be a milestone in the industry, the gaming community is watching Rockstar’s next moves closely.

One of the hidden gems of 2023 will receive a film adaptation

El Paso, Elsewhere, one of the great hidden video games of 2023, will receive a film adaptation, with some big names involved among its ranks.

There is increasing interest in making video game adaptations. Whether it’s for the big screen or television, they are performing so well that it’s normal to see them gaining more legitimacy. That’s why, while we wait for the Death Stranding movie and the new season of Fallout, new announcements keep coming. This time, it’s the film adaptation of one of last year’s hidden gems.

According to Deadline and later confirmed by the game director, Xalavier Nelson Jr., El Paso, Elsewhere will receive a film adaptation. LaKeith Stanfield, known for Sorry to Bother You and Atlanta, will be a producer and is in negotiations to star in the movie. The other two announced parties involved are Di Bonaventura Pictures and Colin Stark, who would act as producers of the film.

El Paso, Elsewhere is a shooter where we enter a motel in El Paso, Texas, that is connected to hell. Embodied as James Savage, a vampire hunter, we will have to prevent Draculae, the queen of vampires, from completing a ritual to end the world. The peculiarity is that this confrontation hits too close to home, personally: Draculae is also James’ ex-partner.

Emotionally devastating, aesthetically incredible, exceptional music, and brilliant action inspired by Max Payne, El Paso, Elsewhere is one of those games you should play if you haven’t already. Even more so when, at some point in the future, it will have a film adaptation.

Sam Lake reminds us that making a video game is hard… even if it’s a remake.

The Max Payne remake is going from strength to strength, but that hasn’t stopped Sam Lake from reminding us in an interview that making a video game is expensive

Sometimes we underestimate what is involved in making a remaster or remake of a game. As much as a game is old, that it’s not being made from scratch, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do. Or that there isn’t a lot to do. At the end of the day, making a video game is always hard work, and when we also have to bring a game from the past and adjust it to the standards of the present, there’s work there too. That’s why we should be more respectful with remakes. And have them in more value.

This is exactly what has been brought up in an interview with VCG by Sam Lake regarding the Max Payne remakes. Announced last April 2022 for Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 5 and PC, both games will be sold in a single pack. Although there is still no release date, Lake wanted to clarify the scope of this project.

Because while it would be easy to do it from less, his words make it clear that it’s hard work. To paraphrase what he says in the interview “it’s a significant task in the sense that, even dealing with old games, just the thought of bringing them up to modern standards and combining them into one, you can see that it’s a very, very big project.” Something we’ve already said ourselves, but it sounds more credible when said by the game’s author himself.

Max Payne is a third-person shooter that was originally released in 2001 for PC, followed by versions for PlayStation 2, Xbox, Mac Os X, Game Boy Advance, iOs and Android. It was widely celebrated for its dark, mature story, spectacular action and a mechanic they called bullet time, which essentially consisted of Matrix-style slowdowns of gunfights at any point in the game. It would be followed by a sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in 2003, which was equally acclaimed.

So the next time you’re tempted to complain about a remake, remember Sam Lake. Of all the people who work so hard to bring games forward. Because while it’s true that there may be too many remakes, that doesn’t take away from the hard work they put in.
