Andrew Garfield has become an iconic figure in the Spider-Man universe, being the only contemporary actor to have portrayed the famous superhero without starring in a complete trilogy. In his recent appearance at the Middle East Film & Comic Con in Abu Dhabi, the British actor expressed his desire to once again embody the character, albeit with a unique and surprising approach. “I would love to play the character again in some way, but I think it would have to be something very strange,” Garfield commented, suggesting that a future portrayal should stray from the conventional.
Garfield, who gained notoriety for his role in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, has highlighted the creative freedom offered by the animated Spider-Verse movies as inspiration for his possible return. This innovative approach could be key to reintegrating into the role that catapulted him to fame after being acclaimed for performances in films like The Social Network and Never Let Me Go. However, his journey as Spider-Man was brief, as Sony canceled the third film he was contracted for, leading him to pass the mantle to Tom Holland, who now portrays the web-slinger in a new era.
Now more prepared to be Spider-Man
Despite having made a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland, Garfield has stated that he does not plan to return for Holland’s upcoming film, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Reflecting on his experience, the actor commented that, at that time, he was not ready for the media attention that comes with the role, as he feared losing his own identity in the process. “I had an allergic reaction to everything related to Spider-Man,” he said, alluding to his concern about criticism and the pressure he feels when dealing with his public figure.
