Magic: The Gathering is in a sweet spot. At least in terms of sales. It seems to be reaching a more general audience, thanks to its collaboration with multiple franchises, and they hope to continue doing so in the near future by collaborating with some of the biggest IPs in the world.
One of these is Marvel. And while Spider-Man wasn’t exactly what we expected, it seems they want to fix that with their new attempt with the franchise: Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes.
Superheroes and supervillains, united
The most striking thing at first is that, unlike the Spider-Man collection, this time we are not limited to a single universe or character from the comics. Here are all the superheroes from the Marvel universe, without exception. As in the case of Spider-Man, very focused on the comics, it seeks to appeal to the audience that has grown up reading comics rather than the much more recent MCU fan audience.
This has allowed this collection to introduce us to some lesser-known characters for anyone who doesn’t have a good knowledge of comics. In addition to others well known to all. From the Fantastic Four to several of the Avengers and the X-Men, here are some of our favorite superheroes. And of course, their rivals. Namor, Thanos, and Doctor Doom join the battle to ensure that no puppet is left headless and that your plans come to fruition. Even if they are not the most noble.
In fact, one of the mechanics of Spider-Man returns in association with this idea: that of heroes and villains. Most of the cards in the set are either heroes or villains, depending on whether they are superheroes or supervillains, and many cards have specific effects depending on which they are. Encouraging the creation of tribal effects by bringing together those of their class to enhance their strengths, avoiding mixing them.
All of this also reinforces one of the weaknesses that existed in the Spider-Man set: the lack of cards and synergies. With many more heroes and villains and ways to support them, there would not only be a way to play the new superhero cards, but also to revisit the cards from the Spider-Man collection and give them a new appreciation in the context of having many more cards to work with.
Products for Everyone
On the other hand, the collection will also feature various card treatments associated with the comics. Whether they are character logo cards, showcasing the characters and their names; panel cards, where there are literally comic book pages on the card; or classic cover cards, there is art for everyone in this collection. Even more so if we add the reprints of mythical Magic cards, now with panel art and classic Marvel covers, adding a new context to both the cards and the images.
In addition, and unlike the Spider-Man collection, Marvel Super Heroes will have four dedicated Commander decks. With one for The Avengers, another for Wakanda, another for The Fantastic Four, and one dedicated to Doctor Doom, they have taken special care to ensure there is a product for everyone. This is especially evident in the special Bundles and the Beginner’s Box, a product with ten half-decks to learn how to play the game with all Marvel superhero cards.
With this collection, Wizards of the Coast seems to want to enhance their synergies with Marvel. Whether it will work remains to be seen, but it seems they have learned the lesson regarding the issues they encountered with Spider-Man. So get ready, gather your Avengers, and on June 26th you will be able to enjoy Marvel superheroes in Magic: The Gathering.
