On October 27, 2000, Dinamic Multimedia launched La Prisión, a title that has established itself as the first MMORPG in Spain, marking a milestone in the history of national video games. Its arrival was a bold bet in a complicated technological context, characterized by limited Internet connections and a market still largely unfamiliar with monthly subscriptions, which included an initial payment of 3,990 pesetas and a monthly fee of 1,000 pesetas.
A very unique video game
The Prison was distinguished by its focus on social interaction, fostering the creation of active communities that resembled early social networks. Although the game faced numerous technical issues after its launch, it managed to establish an environment where players could communicate and interact in novel ways for the time.
The project went through three significant stages: it was launched by Dinamic, later managed by Cryo Networks, and finally, maintained by its original creators until 2018. Despite its modest commercial success, the legacy of La Prisión endures among its fans, recalling memorable moments, including celebrations and important events within the game.
Currently, a new project called Revivir La Prisión aims to recover the essence of the original game using modern technologies like Unreal Engine. This community effort aims to revitalize the experience of La Prisión, offering new features and design improvements, such as interactive maps and NPCs that will enrich the gaming environment.
Developers have begun public testing, and although the release plans were scheduled for 2021, the preliminary results are promising. It remains to be seen whether this new approach can attract both old players and a new audience, thus revitalizing a classic that remains significant in the history of Spanish video games.
