In an unexpected turn that has not been well received by the community, Sony has announced a 50 euro increase in the price of the PS5 Digital in several markets, including Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. This increase, which sets the new price of the console at 499.99 euros in Europe and 749.95 AUD in Australia, is justified by the company due to a difficult economic environment, with high inflation and fluctuations in exchange rates, according to a statement from Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
In exchange, the disc reader price drops, but it’s not much consolation
The price increase for the PS5 Digital represents the second one in Spain since 2022, as a similar increase of 50 euros had already been recorded in the past. In the United Kingdom, the console will also be affected, reaching a price of 429.99 pounds. Meanwhile, the price of the standard console and the anticipated PS5 Pro will remain unchanged, which could be a relief for some fans.
Not all news is bad, as Sony has also reduced the price of the disc reader in Europe, from 119.99 euros to 79.99 euros. This adjustment will also apply in other markets, providing a slight offset amid the overall announcement of increases.
Despite these decisions, the company faces criticism, especially after recent increases in the PS Plus service in Latin America, as well as similar hardware price increases in markets like Japan and South Korea in recent years. This phenomenon raises questions about the sustainability of Sony’s pricing strategy in an increasingly competitive video game market.
Fans are on the lookout, as with rumors of future expansions and title releases, the video game industry continues to evolve, and the impacts of this pricing decision may have significant repercussions on brand perception.
