Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highly anticipated third installment of the saga directed by James Cameron, has grossed 345 million dollars in its opening weekend. Although this number would be impressive for most productions, it falls short compared to the debut of its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed 441.6 million dollars three years ago. The difference of nearly 100 million raises questions about the future of the franchise.
A great success, but a small failure
Despite this drop in initial revenue, historically, the Avatar movies have shown a remarkable ability to maintain their earnings after this first weekend, compared to other productions that tend to experience significant declines. This pattern suggests that Fire and Ash may experience box office sustainability in the coming weeks, benefiting from its loyal fan base and the promotional momentum surrounding the saga.
James Cameron has stated that for Disney to consider the production of Avatar 4, Fire and Ash must rank among the top ten highest-grossing films of all time. This statement could be interpreted as additional pressure on the film, although the idea of not returning to Pandora seems unlikely, unless the film suffers a huge commercial setback.
Of the 345 million raised, 88 million comes from North American cinemas, while the rest, 257 million, comes from international markets. This global presence reinforces the idea that, despite the initial figures, Avatar: Fire and Ash could still have the potential to become a long-term success.
