Struggling Threads Continues Revamp Efforts to Retain Users, Faces Uphill Battle

In less than a month, its active users have dropped by 82%. Come on, whoever is there will still be echoing. However, in Meta they have set to work to stop the bleeding with three novelties that sound late, slow and bad.

It’s quite amusing that Threads is coming to Spain as an app already deceased. The one that had self-proclaimed itself as the successor to Twitter has found out that competing with Elon Musk‘s social network isn’t as easy, and in less than a month, its active users have decreased by 82%. So, anyone still there must be in the minority. Nevertheless, at Meta, they have taken action to stem the bleeding with three novelties that sound like “too little, too late.”

I open thread

Firstly, the major novelty is the ability to directly share a Threads post to Instagram Direct Messages, similar to how it’s done with any web post. Secondly, there’s the option to add descriptions to the photos and videos you publish. Thirdly, they’ve introduced a button for easily mentioning other accounts. Essentially, these are features that should have been available from the start.

If Threads intends to succeed in a landscape where we all know Twitter is going down, but we’re waiting until the last moment to jump ship, it will have to go all out and not settle for these changes, which are more fitting for an app that appeared (or “app-eared”?) too early in the market, without proper testing and lacking the minimum expectations for a Twitter clone. Many potential users, but few interested ones.

Zuckerberg, who still has his impending showdown-debate with Musk, promised that Threads would eventually feature a search button (oh, well, that changes things) and could be accessed independently from the phone, with its own web version. In other words, it’s going to have the bare minimum that Twitter offers. Perhaps this will elevate Threads’ posts, but at first glance, it doesn’t sound very promising, especially considering that Meta’s app lacks trending topics, hashtags, or direct messages.

It’s highly likely that Twitter users, while seeking a new haven for the blue bird’s ship, made a pit stop at Threads before deciding between BlueSky or sticking to the social network that only Musk refers to as “X.” What’s clear is that the refuge of the once-known “microblogging” world isn’t in the hands of another billionaire. At least, not without giving the concept a spin. We’ll have to keep waiting.

Threads Messaging Demystified: Understanding the Unique Terminology Behind It

There is a lot of confusion with Threads and it is normal. Mark Zuckerberg’s new social network is indeed a punch to Elon Musk’s face and not the fake fight…

They say Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk want to get into a cage and have a fierce fight. The truth is, the battle has already begun, and it’s called Threads, the real threat to Twitter.

The folks at Meta have launched their own Twitter. Cleaner and prettier, according to early users. But when it comes down to it, it’s just like Twitter, except with a rather criminal algorithm (nothing it suggests will be to your liking).

So, with such app similarity, functionality, and interface… what do we call the messages we write and post on Threads? Because on Twitter, we already had the perfect word “tweet” and “to tweet”… can we use the same?

Let’s call Threads’ messages a tweet

We have pondered this question extensively, and our colleagues at The Verge have as well. We have come to the conclusion that we can refer to the messages on Meta’s social network the same way we have always referred to messages on Twitter: “tweet” and “to tweet.”

While many people have simply referred to the messages as “posts,” which is a fitting term, the reality is that it is too vague.

In the early hours of Threads’ public launch, people tried “threet” and “tit,” as well as a whole series of textile-related wordplay. But all of them seem like poor ideas.

For that reason, we advocate for the use of the word “tweet” and the action of “twitter.” It has a defined meaning in several dictionaries directly related to online posting. It is a word that immediately connotes the specific type of publication that microblogs tend towards.

“Tweet” is the perfect word to describe a short and quick message posted in a feed. And if you think “tweet” can only refer to Twitter, you’re mistaken. Twitter didn’t even invent the word.

As explained in The Verge, in the early days of Twitter, they were simply called “posts” or “updates.” Then, for a while, it was “twit.” By the way, be very careful if you install the app.

Threads Exposed: The Shocking Secrets and Risks Nobody Told You About

Meta’s new social network, as if Facebook and Instagram weren’t enough, has come to compete with Twitter. It’s called Threads…

We’re all crazy about Threads. It’s understandable, with Twitter on the brink of collapse, an app that offers the same thing as the blue bird social network sounds interesting… but without Elon Musk at the helm. The problem is believing that Meta is the good company.

With big companies, there’s always a catch. You can sign up for Mark Zuckerberg’s new Twitter clone. And you can use your Instagram account to get a unique badge that shows you’re now a Threadhead.

The problem is that if you deactivate your Threads profile and delete the app, deleting your Threads profile will also delete your entire Instagram account.

The morning after the launch, users rushed to spot a clause in Threads’ Supplementary Privacy Policy that stated, “You can deactivate your Threads profile at any time, but your Threads profile can only be deleted by deleting your Instagram account.”

Threads utilizes an Instagram account for accessing the app, although they remain two separate applications. Another part of the policy states, “Your Threads profile is part of your Instagram account and can be deleted at any time by deleting your Instagram account.”

Threads is just another app designed to collect your data

The competition to Twitter closely resembles Elon Musk’s application, but it is a data collector, and the current app seems like an absolute chaos.

Instagram’s director, Adam Mosseri, posted a video of himself in bed, stating that he had stayed up all night watching 10 million people sign up for the new application. Zuckerberg also reiterated that number in some of his posts on Thread.

Threads is a Meta application, and it certainly feels like it. The main feed is filled with content from people you don’t follow, showing you things that the algorithm thinks you want to see instead of what you actually want.

In addition to the lack of a “Following” tab, the current search function fails when it comes to searching for topics and is limited to identifying other users. In response to the complaints, Mosseri promised that both a dedicated feed for the people you follow and proper search functionality are “on the list.”

Similarly, Instagram’s Head of Product, Tom Bender, wrote on Threads, “We haven’t released the cool stuff yet!” If the “cool stuff” includes the option to delete your Threads profile without locking your Instagram account, it would be great news.

Beyond Twitter: Discover the 4 Alternatives, from Mastodon to the Nostalgic Tuenti

Better a dying Twitter asking for death than a social network in which your comments echo.

Ever since Elon Musk took the helm of Twitter, it’s been running with a rattle and a mouse spinning in a wheel. In other words, it’s still standing purely by chance (when it’s still standing). If you’re also experiencing the downfall of Twitter day by day, 600 tweets to 600 tweets, and you’re wondering where the best place is to escape and create a new virtual civilization, we bring you the four best options. However, if you want a sneak peek of the moral of the story: it’s better to have a dying Twitter begging for death than a social network where your comments echo.

Mastodon

Surely you have an account on Mastodon, the decentralized Twitter that… is difficult to learn how to use. Those who have already built a new cyber life there say that it’s easier to block people you don’t want to see, that once you get the hang of it, it becomes pure intuition, and that you can write extremely long posts without having to pay anyone (and probably never having to do so). Among all the alternatives, Mastodon is the most popular… although, let’s be honest, it only fills up when Twitter is struggling. It’s like Telegram when WhatsApp breaks down… or the bird’s own network when Instagram doesn’t work.

BlueSky

Jack Dorsey took Elon Musk’s money and went off to create his own platform, BlueSky, which for now can only be accessed by invitation (they give one every fifteen days), and it’s… Twitter in a more primitive state. Exactly. Well, with an owner who isn’t an arrogant millionaire parodied in a thousand movies like ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,’ but otherwise, all the secrecy wasn’t worth it. By the time it comes to light, it will be too late (probably), and we’ll already be onto other things.

Truth Social

When Donald Trump was banned from Twitter, the former US president decided to establish his own social network centered around his persona. It’s essentially a version of Mastodon tailored for Trump’s fans, so you already know what to expect there: QAnon, fake news, conspiracies, and lies. If that’s your cup of tea, go ahead. If not, it’s better to pretend it doesn’t exist.

Dreaming of the return of Tuenti

There was a time when everything was simpler, damn it. In Tuenti, there were no millionaire gentlemen, the Nazis were silent, and everything seemed easier (because it WAS easier, among other things). What’s the alternative if you don’t like making videos? Facebook is the most outdated social network, and the rest are still in their infancy.

Who knows if Threads, the app that Instagram is creating to copy Twitter (have we forgotten that Stories are a copy of Snapchat and Reels of TikTok?), will find the key… even if we go from an arrogant millionaire to another arrogant millionaire. It’s like jumping from the boiling pot into the virtual frying pan. Internet has been good while it lasted: Can it just end already?
