The recent statement by Nexon CEO, Junghun Lee, regarding the widespread use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the video game industry has sparked intense debate. Lee stated that “all companies are using AI right now,” provoking strong reactions among independent developers who oppose this trend. His statement comes in a context where the industry is divided between those who support the use of AI and those who remain reluctant to adopt it.

A defense that is not working well for them

A notable example is the case of the video game ARC Raiders, where the studio has decided not to rely on AI for the main narrative. However, text-to-speech technology has been implemented to generate procedural dialogues and initial 3D models created with AI have also been used, although all results are refined by the human team. Lee argued that, in an environment where everyone uses similar technologies, the true differentiation will depend on human creativity. “If everyone is working with the same technologies, the real question is: how do you survive?” he stated.

However, his words have found strong opposition. Studios like Necrosoft, developer of Demonschool, emphasized their rejection, stating that “I would rather cut off my arms than use AI.” Similarly, Huskrafts, known for Rogue Eclipse, also expressed their commitment to keeping their work free of AI, with internal agreements that prohibit its use. Other developers, such as Neil Jones from Aerial Knight and Xalavier Nelson Jr. from Strange Scaffold, agreed that AI has never been necessary to create good video games, calling for greater resistance to the normalization of its use in the industry.

The debate surrounding artificial intelligence in video game development seems far from resolved, with an increasingly vocal indie sector rejecting this technology.

Strange Scaffold, known for its ability to launch multiple titles annually, has announced its latest project: Co-op Kaiju Horror Cooking. This cooperative horror game promises a unique experience where players, in the role of medieval monks, must cook for gigantic creatures, the kaiju, that they summon with their Gregorian chant abilities. Once a kaiju is summoned, the group has ten minutes to prepare a dish worthy of such a colossal monster, using a catapult to serve the food directly into its mouth.

Invoke giant monsters with Gregorian chants

The concept of the game includes a maze of alternate realities where players will have to search for ingredients, from basic ones like chicken to more exotic ones like minotaur meat. However, collecting these ingredients is not an easy task, as players will have to navigate dangers and traps along the way, in addition to facing the guardians of the maze, who are not known for their kindness. Throughout this journey, players will be able to find treasures lost by previous monks, which adds a touch of exploration to the game.

Co-op Kaiju Horror Cooking will feature 13 levels and will officially launch on July 29. Currently, Strange Scaffold is conducting a playtest of the game, so those interested can request access on the game’s Steam page. Although the concept has generated notable interest, some analysts suggest that the game could benefit from further polishing before its release, something that is often seen in productions of this nature.

With its fun and quirky approach, which has already characterized other titles like Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator and An Airport For Aliens Currently Run By Dogs, this new game is shaping up to be another intriguing proposal in Strange Scaffold’s catalog.

The game I Am Your Beast, developed by Strange Scaffold, will officially launch on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on June 25th. This title has been recognized as one of the best exclusive PC games of 2024 by GameSpot, generating great anticipation among console gamers.

A masterpiece of reflections and feeling good

In I Am Your Beast, players take on the role of Alphonse Harding, a former secret agent who chooses to leave behind his dangerous life in espionage. However, his former organization, the Covert Operations Initiative (COI), is determined to pull him out of retirement and pursues him after he rejects one last mission. The story follows Harding’s confrontation against countless assassins sent by his ex-employer, promising action-packed content and unexpected twists.

The console version will include a free expansion that was released last November, which adds nine new levels and an epilogue that promises even more mayhem and action to the game. This epilogue offers a unique perspective, told from the point of view of the few COI agents who survived Harding’s attack, describing him almost as a superhuman figure that defies the laws of logic and physics.

Despite the fact that I Am Your Beast was ported to iOS without this expansion, the mobile version will also receive a significant update to be “complete” in features, aligning with the console and PC versions. With these advancements, the game positions itself as one of the standout shooters to enjoy in 2025, due to its exciting narrative and innovative gameplay.

Monolight Productions has closed, but other studios could imitate their Némesis system

Monolight Productions has closed, but other studios could imitate their Némesis system

Introduced in 2014 with the game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Monolith Productions’ Nemesis system has marked a milestone in video game design by allowing enemies to exist within a hierarchy and remember previous interactions with the player. This innovative system has been a topic of discussion since Warner Bros. Games closed the studio this winter, leading many to think that players may have reached the end of their relationship with this unique mechanic for over a decade.

A system that copyright will not prevent from being used

Despite the uncertainty, industry experts have pointed out that the legacy of the Nemesis system could continue to influence future developments. Xalavier Nelson Jr., leader of the studio Strange Scaffold, commented in a recent interview that the patent of the system offers other designers a significant space to operate without infringing legal restrictions. He mentions that similar elements can be found in the Mercenaries system in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which retains the idea of a hierarchical list of enemies, although it cannot replicate all the complexities of the original design due to the existing patent.

Scott Kelly, patent attorney, adds that the video game industry is built on prior ideas and suggests that developers can leverage aspects of the Nemesis system without infringing the patent. This flexibility offers hope that concepts inspired by Monolith’s mechanics will persist in future productions.

In a recent turn of events, Warner Bros. Games is working on a new intellectual property, following the cancellation of a Wonder Woman game. Although details are scarce, this new IP is expected to launch this year, which could present a new opportunity for the evolution of gaming in the ecosystem that once housed the innovative Nemesis system.
