Is it true or not? In a tumultuous moment after Cisco detected severe security breaches in one of the most widely used enterprise platforms in the United States, it is not certain whether all of Sony’s systems have actually been affected. Nevertheless, it is not a possibility to be ignored: the hacker group RansomedVC has openly announced on their dark web page, as is customary in these circles, that they have successfully compromised the systems of the massive empire that is Sony.

Perhaps an exaggerated claim

Sony has not commented on these claims, although it is likely that they would not admit to them unless absolutely necessary if they were true. In any case, this announcement could be false or simply highly exaggerated. For now, what is clear is that Sony has not yielded to the group’s demands, so if the claims are true, the corporation is standing firm. This is a desirable outcome considering that in many of these cases, the objective is to extort the company, and there is no guarantee that the information will not be released later.

Regardless of what it means for Sony, the company should address the situation sooner rather than later: at this moment, the data of millions of users could be at risk, with the danger that it might fall into the wrong hands or be compromised in some way. However, Sony is not the first to experience this: Capcom and Ubisoft were hacked in 2020, and CD Projekt Red in 2021. In 2022, Bandai Namco and Rockstar also suffered extremely serious security breaches.

As for RansomedVC, they are not a very famous hacker group, and they only gained notoriety in 2023 after publishing a list of their first nine victims on the Malwarebytes website, so it is definitely uncertain whether they have the capabilities to carry out what they claim to have done. We will find out soon, in any case.

The future is green. Going green refers to taking action or implementing policies that are sustainable and environmentally friendly. Through actions such as using renewable energy sources, reducing energy consumption, recycling, and conserving natural resources, you can start your own green initiative. The goal of going green is to minimize the negative impact of human activities on the environment and promote sustainable living. Today, recycled batteries are aiding in that dream.

Old battery recycling can help power electric vehicles (EVs) by providing a source of lithium and other materials for new battery production. Recycling used batteries also helps to reduce the environmental impact of mining for new materials and can lower the cost of producing new batteries. Additionally, recycling used batteries can help to ensure a steady supply of materials for the growing EV market, which is expected to continue to expand in the coming years.

Organizations such as Redwood Materials are part of a growing number of recycling companies that seek to find an alternative to lithium-ion batteries that are used in EVs. I actually discovered that most battery materials that are discarded are valuable raw materials for meeting the great demand for EVs. Through its facility, Redwood is expected to produce materials for 1 million lithium-ion batteries by 2025 for EVs, with a possibility of reaching 5 million batteries by 2030. 

There’s also another Canadian firm known as Li-cycle that already has four commercial facilities that recycle about 30,000 tons of batteries annually. These recycling facilities have proven to be a great incentive for the EV industry.

The process used by these recycling centers is known as hydrometallurgy. The materials in the batteries are dissolved and separated using different types of acids and solvents. That’s where materials such as graphite, copper, nickel, and cobalt are obtained. Recently the process of hydrometallurgy also allows for the recovery of lithium at high rates. 

Considering the growth of the EV industry, more than 200 new mines might be needed by 2035 to provide more raw materials such as cobalt,  nickel, and lithium for EV batteries. So recycling materials could come in handy in reducing the number of materials needed to construct a battery. 

When the construction of Redwood has been completed, they plan on focusing on producing two major products, which are the mixture of lithium, cobalt, and nickel, as well as the copper foil for anodes. Redwood forecasts that they could produce enough batteries for more than a million EVs every year. 

Recycling batteries projects the potential for a quicker way to create EV batteries. Critics are worried that setting up a new mine could take decades. The question is, what will happen to the EV battery industry when recyclable material is in high demand and low supply? The major challenge that most recyclers will be faced with is unpredictable input. 

I believe battery recycling is important when it comes to fulfilling the promise of EVs. With EVs being cheaper than the standard vehicle in some countries, the recycling process is definitely a step in the right direction towards turning the world green.

In today’s world, tech advancements happen on an everyday basis. This makes it a given that 2023 will bring a lot of new tech into our everyday lives. Some of these are refinements on current proposals, but there’s the potential for some game changers, too.

Here are some of the tech highlights for 2023, most of them with a high probability of happening.

More electric cars

Sure, Elon Musk and his CyberTruck have been ridiculed enough but the concept of electric cars is here to stay. In fact, not only Musk’s Tesla is predicting things will keep up for this type of vehicle.

Ford, General Motors, Audio, and others are already increasing their production of electric cars, as petrol-based cars are set to be banned in countries around the world in the not-too-distant future.

Better interactivity with virtual assistants

There’s a lot of buzz about new AI chatbots like ChatGPT. They go beyond your typical (and let’s admit it, infuriating) customer service chatbots. ChatGPT, for instance, can write poems, give meaningful, contextual answers and even help with errors when coding software.

This means chatbots might expand into other areas than customer assistance. They might become research assistants, providing instant information in an easier, more coherent way than a Google search would ever be able to.

New social media tech

Facebook has been the target of multiple controversies throughout the past few years. Twitter’s takeover by Musk also had its fair share of criticism, with Twitter users voting for him to step down. On the other side of the world, ByteDance revealed some security issues regarding employees obtaining data from users inappropriately. 

All this creates the perfect scenario for newer social media experiences to take the lead, which is already happening with apps like Mastodon and BeReal. In the case of Mastodon, the huge amount of new users made their servers collapse a few times.

The big one: the Metaverse

Whereas 2023 most likely won’t be the year where the Metaverse gets fully integrated into our lives, it looks like the concept will be further refined and will gain a foothold. 

To start with, there’s a big PR effort to make VR Goggles leave the “gaming” aspect in the collective consciousness, and become an everyday tool for meetings, visiting virtual locations, and more.

This is also paired with the concept of Augmented Reality, where tech would assist in myriad ways. For instance, you could look at a building with your AR lenses, and it’ll display information about the offices inside.

Changes in everyday life if this technology gains acceptance would be enormous. As Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said, people won’t be able to understand how to live without it.

A year of tech refinement

Tech predictions for 2023 look a bit underwhelming at first glance. Where are the flying cars, human-like robots, and more? It doesn’t look like 2023 will bring a lot of tech innovation relating to physical devices. However, social changes thanks to the aforementioned items, can become important.

Of course, these are just predictions based on known information. Nobody knows if a surprising, groundbreaking tech isn’t around the corner, waiting to be released.
