The highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us premieres in April, and fans have already gotten a first look at the new images of Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who return to their roles as Joel and Ellie. These images also feature several new characters like Dina, Jesse, Abby, Owen, Mel, and Nora, all familiar to those who have played The Last of Us Part II.
A season where fidelity to the original is somewhat set aside
One of the most interesting novelties is that this new season will restore content that was cut from the original video game, in addition to introducing a character not yet revealed, who could connect with the Seraphite prophet mentioned in the game. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the video game and showrunner of the series, has indicated that the portrayal of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, will focus more on emotional drama than physicality, as she was not asked to gain weight for the role.
Although HBO has not yet confirmed a third season, both Druckmann and Craig Mazin have expressed their interest in continuing the story beyond the second installment. Mazin suggested that it is quite likely that the narrative will progress to a fourth or even a fifth season, depending on the audience figures. This raises questions about the future of the series and the development of the anticipated The Last of Us Part III.
Druckmann has confirmed that he already has an idea to close the video game trilogy, although it has not been determined when it will be released. The HBO series seems to be well-positioned to continue capturing the audience’s interest, which could provide the necessary time for the release of the last chapter of the video game saga before the series reaches its conclusion.
