The Rookie has been renewed for a ninth season, establishing itself as a global success that has managed to reinvent itself over the years. The series, created by Alexi Hawley, follows the story of John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, a police officer who begins his career in Los Angeles at over 40 years old, being the oldest recruit in the department. However, the appeal of The Rookie goes beyond Nolan’s journey, thanks to a large cast of characters who have evolved alongside the narrative.

Is Nathan leaving?

Among these characters is Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O’Neil, who has managed to transform from a spontaneous officer to a dedicated undercover agent. This development has resonated positively with fans, positioning her as one of the audience’s favorites. Additionally, Tim Bradford, played by Eric Winter, represents a significant evolution, questioning his beliefs and broadening his perspective throughout the series.

Although there are still no signs that Nathan Fillion plans to leave The Rookie, the actor has stated in interviews that, in the event of a possible departure, Melissa O’Neil could take on a leading role. This possibility has sparked discussions about the future of the series and its ability to continue without its main star. Fillion, who accepted the role on the condition that the series would not focus exclusively on him, has seen his wish fulfilled and is now satisfied with the strong presence of the rest of the cast.

The renewal for a ninth season not only ensures the continuation of the stories of existing characters, but also confirms that the audience is interested in more than just John Nolan’s story. Thus, the universe of The Rookie continues to expand, demonstrating that it can remain relevant and appealing to viewers.

Actor Jay Ellis, known for his role in ‘Insecure’, will play the lead role of Holland.

Another opportunity for The Rookie

The creator of the original series, Alexi Hawley, is in charge of this project and has already completed the script for the pilot episode. This episode has been greenlit and filming is expected to begin between winter and spring of this year. The series could debut in the 2026/2027 season, potentially coinciding with the hypothetical season 9 of ‘The Rookie’, whose eighth season premiere is scheduled for January 6, 2026.

ABC seeks to capitalize on the success of ‘The Rookie’, its biggest asset in the police genre, taking the narrative to a more rural context, where themes of vocation and personal struggle will be explored in a less urban environment.

However, the network has mixed experience in expanding this franchise. The previous spin-off, ‘The Rookie: Feds’, starring Niecy Nash-Betts as the oldest recruit in the FBI, was canceled after a single season due to its poor performance. The network has acknowledged that developing a television universe around ‘The Rookie’ has encountered several obstacles, but remains committed to trying to establish a new franchise with this new narrative approach.

The series created by Alexi Hawley on Netflix has been canceled after two seasons, a surprising decision considering the success of his other production, The Rookie, which has remained one of the most popular series on television. However, that has not stopped Hawley’s ambitions, who is now developing a new project for NBC.

Candice Fox’s novels are in fashion

In collaboration with Jon Huertas, known for his role as Miguel Rivas in This Is Us, Hawley will produce a series based on the novel Fire With Fire by acclaimed author Candice Fox. This new police drama will follow the story of Enrique Arroyo, a veteran undercover cop played by Huertas, who teams up with rookie Lynette Lamb on a dangerous mission to recover the missing daughter of anguished parents, who threaten to destroy crucial evidence in a forensic lab of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The script for this series is by Weny Mericle, former showrunner of Arrow, which could provide a solid narrative structure to this new project. Jon Huertas not only returns to NBC, where he has had a successful career, but he has also worked on other notable series such as Elementary and Castle.

Candice Fox, author of 11 crime novels and winner of three Ned Kelly awards, has established herself as a prominent voice in the genre. Her partnership with Hawley and Huertas promises to bring her work to a new audience. Additionally, Apple TV+ is working on an adaptation of another work by Fox, titled High Wire, whose production start reflects the growing interest in suspense narratives that have been a success both in literature and on screen.
