Current audiences seem to be enjoying the combination of humor and crime in narratives, which is reflected in the success of series like High Potential, Only Murders in the Building, and The Thursday Murder Club. This phenomenon will intensify with the upcoming release of Knives Out 3, officially titled Wake Up Dead Man. The film features Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, facing his most complicated case to date, set in the enigmatic backdrop of New York.
The blend of comedy and crime is on the rise
Andrew Scott, who plays the science fiction writer Lee Ross in this new installment, comments on the popularity of the “cozy crime” genre. According to him, the mix of comedy and dark crime resonates well with today’s audience, highlighting that “it’s that blend of comedy and murder that attracts audiences.” The film uses a diverse cast to explore a variety of tones, from satire to the poignant.
Wake Up Dead Man not only features Scott, but also a star-studded cast that includes Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, and Josh O’Connor. In this story, O’Connor plays a boxer turned priest who teams up with Blanc to prove his innocence in a murder, a complicated challenge since he is the only one who was at the scene at the time of the crime.
The movie will premiere in theaters on November 26 and will be available on Netflix worldwide starting December 12. With its intrigues and characteristic humor, Knives Out 3 aims to continue the streak of crime stories that have captured the public’s imagination recently.
