Last February, New York City Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Valve for the use of loot boxes in their games. In her own words, in Counter-Strike 2 “children and adults alike are illegally gambling for the chance to win virtual prizes”. She argues that loot boxes are essentially unregulated gambling and should be treated by law as such.
Valve with questionable arguments
Valve’s legal department has responded with a tremendously weak defense. Claiming that “people enjoy surprises” and that “part of the appeal of many popular collectibles, such as baseball cards or cereal boxes, is the possibility of opening a closed box and being surprised with a rare item”. Stating that “no legislature or court has ever condemned this act as illegal gambling”.
The problem is that this is not true. The European Parliament declared that loot boxes are gambling in 2023, tightening its PEGI this past March in relation to this legislation. So it doesn’t seem that this defense has much ground to stand on.
What would happen if the New York justice system sided with the attorney general? That Valve would have problems. The lawsuit demands the equivalent of three times the profits Valve has made from loot boxes and to prevent them from selling them in the future in the state of New York. With the logistical issues this would entail, not to mention the legal precedent it would set. So Valve could be in trouble. If their attempt to pull a Saul Goodman doesn’t end up backfiring.
Punisher is a fascinating character. As a superhero, he not only lacks any powers, but he also has a very different personality from all the others. He doesn’t mind killing, mutilating, and torturing, as long as it’s to the bad guys. This makes him an interesting, albeit controversial, character. He is as violent as he is just, and his moral compass, although well-tuned, makes him very dependent on being well-written to avoid falling into problematic areas. Punisher is a fascinating character. As a superhero, he not only lacks any powers, but he also has a very different character from all the others. But that character is what makes his new special interesting.
A violent and simple special
The Punisher: One Last Kill presents us with a more reclusive and paranoid Frank Castle after the events of the two seasons of the series. Something that is not helped by the fact that New York is plunged into chaos, forcing him to act even at a time when he does not feel capable of doing so. This is the premise for a 50-minute special of pure action and emotional intensity where the series seeks to offer us two things: an unadulterated Punisher and exactly the character we should expect to see assisting Spider-Man in his new movie, Brand New Day. It achieves both, although not without compromises.
The story is violent, brutal, and puts Castle in precarious situations, but at all times it feels like his enemies are underdeveloped. They are undoubtedly evil, but their motivations and reasons for committing crimes or attacking him seem to be little more than the fact that they can. It’s something that works, but it is still a bit disappointing.
Especially because the character of Ma Gnucci is fascinating. In the comics, she is one of the Punisher’s historical enemies, and here she is artfully portrayed by Judith Light. The problem is that, as a villain, she barely has any development beyond her monologues to justify actions that hardly hold up to demonstrate the character development of the only one that matters: Frank Castle. This is where this special truly shines.
The Punisher of Spider-Man
The Punisher: One Last Kill does not aim to tell a deep story. It seeks to establish a tone. To demonstrate who Castle, The Punisher, is here and now, both as a person and as a superhero, and it achieves that with flying colors.
More tortured, more weary, no less violent, but with more empathy and more fragility, that is the character heading to the Spider-Man movie. Someone who is starting to truly feel the weight of what they do. Who is beginning to feel like a superhero and not just a vigilante, even if it’s only in occasional flashes and, due to the simplicity of the script, in a somewhat clumsy and simple way.
But that is the purpose of this special. To act as a bridge between the series and the new movie. Between the MCU and the Spider-Man movies as well. Something that makes us dream of the possibility of seeing not only more Spider-Man in the MCU but also more Punisher, something we will have to see if it ends up happening. But to know, we will have to wait at least until after Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which premieres on July 31. And in the meantime, we can watch The Punisher: One Last Kill, now available on Disney+.

During the recent Xbox Partner Preview, a new game titled Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish was officially announced, which will take place in the streets of New York. This title is set to be released in the third quarter of 2027 and promises to combine elements of role-playing, infiltration, and a narrative where every player action will have significant consequences.
Fighting against vampires and werewolves
In Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, players take on the role of a hunter who must confront their own ghosts from the past. From an old bar that serves as a refuge, players will be able to track their prey through infiltration, hacking, and threat tactics, also leveraging a specialized arsenal of weapons. The focus on teamwork with fellow hunters, each with unique skills and personal experiences, adds an extra level of strategy to the game.
However, the development and release of the game may be affected by recent financial issues of the publisher Nacon, which is in a state of insolvency. Although the release is scheduled for more than three years in the future, this financial uncertainty worries those following the Teyon project, the studio responsible for the development. Teyon has previously succeeded with titles based on licensed properties, generating positive expectations around this new release.
Despite the doubts about Nacon’s future, the gaming community is enthusiastic about the new announcement, especially considering Teyon’s history with games like Robocop: Rogue City and Terminator: Resistance. The ambition to include role-playing elements in Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish could be an exciting step and well-received by fans of the genre.

Wizards of the Coast is fully committed to the idea of collaborating with other universes that are not from Magic: The Gathering, whether we like it or not. Out of seven game collections this year, four are of this kind, called Universe Beyond, and we must accept that it is the new normal. Not only because we cannot change it, but also because some of those collections look very fun.
This is the case of the upcoming collection promised to us by Wizards of the Coast. Because after we went to New York at the end of last year to meet Spider-Man, his allies, and his villains, we are now returning to the Big Apple for some very different characters. Because they are turtles, they are ninjas, they are teenagers, they are mutants, and they really like pizza. And they are going to show you that even if it doesn’t seem like it, they fit into Magic: The Gathering just as much as a dragon, a wizard, or a troll.
The Ninja Turtles want to impose themselves in Magic
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collection will give us a glimpse into the entire history of these characters through a selection of cards that aims to showcase both memorable characters and moments that all fans remember, as well as some that only the most hardcore fans will recall. With basic art treatments closer to the latest iterations in the comics and animated series of the characters, there are different artworks for those who have a favorite era. If you like the original Ninja Turtles or the 90s animated series, don’t worry: you’ll find them in this collection. However, we can’t guarantee that they will be as easy to find as the others.
As for the game mechanics, we have several and very varied ones. Only one new mechanic, but beloved and hated mechanics from Magic players are returning. Something that practically guarantees that the collection will be a great success among competitive players. And almost all of them are easy to predict considering the characters’ stories.
One of the mechanics that returns is the artifact affinity. With at least one creature that explicitly has this mechanic, which allows us to pay one less mana for it for each artifact we have, this is one of the major themes of the collection. Artifacts matter. The collection is full of artifacts and cards that place great importance on the number of artifacts you have on the battlefield and their status, making them even more prominent in the games.
Especially because several cards include mutagens. Tokens that, if we pay one mana, allow us to put a +1/+1 counter on any creature at instant speed. A very powerful effect that we should not overlook.
The new mechanic, which is old, is Stealth. Basically an evolution of Ninjutsu, it allows you to pay an alternative cost to play a creature by bouncing a creature that is not being blocked during the attack turn. Why Stealth and not Ninjutsu, if they work the same? Because they do not work exactly the same. Ninjutsu can be applied at any time from when it is declared that the creature is not blocked until the combat ends, while Stealth can only be applied at the moment when blockers have already been declared and the creature has not been blocked. Being a slightly reduced version in power of this old mechanic.
If we add to that the essential Commander decks, which will allow us to take control of the Turtles, Master Splinter, and even the sinister Shredder, the collection is exactly everything that fans of the franchise could dream of. A true celebration of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. One that you will still have to wait for: the collection will be released on March 6th. But, seeing what they have prepared, the wait is sure to be worth it.

Current audiences seem to be enjoying the combination of humor and crime in narratives, which is reflected in the success of series like High Potential, Only Murders in the Building, and The Thursday Murder Club. This phenomenon will intensify with the upcoming release of Knives Out 3, officially titled Wake Up Dead Man. The film features Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig, facing his most complicated case to date, set in the enigmatic backdrop of New York.
The blend of comedy and crime is on the rise
Andrew Scott, who plays the science fiction writer Lee Ross in this new installment, comments on the popularity of the “cozy crime” genre. According to him, the mix of comedy and dark crime resonates well with today’s audience, highlighting that “it’s that blend of comedy and murder that attracts audiences.” The film uses a diverse cast to explore a variety of tones, from satire to the poignant.
Wake Up Dead Man not only features Scott, but also a star-studded cast that includes Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Glenn Close, and Josh O’Connor. In this story, O’Connor plays a boxer turned priest who teams up with Blanc to prove his innocence in a murder, a complicated challenge since he is the only one who was at the scene at the time of the crime.
The movie will premiere in theaters on November 26 and will be available on Netflix worldwide starting December 12. With its intrigues and characteristic humor, Knives Out 3 aims to continue the streak of crime stories that have captured the public’s imagination recently. The new movie Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay, delves into the depths of Grace’s mind, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who faces a distressing postpartum depression after moving from New York to a rural house in Montana with her husband Jackson, played by Robert Pattinson. The plot portrays not only the geographical change but also a dramatic shift in Grace’s life, as she deals with everyday issues in her new home, from a mouse problem to a lack of time to write.
A depression that will not end well
As the story progresses, the emotional tension increases, revealing how postpartum depression affects not only Grace but everyone around her. Lawrence’s performance has been acclaimed by critics, who highlight her ability to convey chaos and despair, embodying a woman who is physically and emotionally falling apart. Ramsay, known for her ambiguous and surreal style, creates a cinematic experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats and leaves plenty of room for interpretation.
Although Ramsay’s narrative can be challenging, Lawrence’s powerful performance makes it hard to look away. The film offers a haunting glimpse into a mother’s internal struggles, leaving a lasting mark on the audience. As the story unfolds, the question arises of how far a woman can go before a total breakdown, a theme that resonates strongly today.

Throughout its screening, the film accumulated violent incidents that included fights and vandalism, contributing to at least three deaths being reported among viewers leaving the theaters.
A movie that knew how to win over the audience
The Warriors narrates the odyssey of a gang from Coney Island falsely accused of the murder of Cyrus, a charismatic leader. Although its plot may seem like an urban dystopia, many critics have pointed out that it resembles an exaggerated documentary about New York youth in the late 70s. The film challenged media stereotypes by portraying its gang characters with humanity, focusing on themes of brotherhood and survival.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was a financial success, grossing $22.5 million in the United States on a budget of only $4 million. However, the violence surrounding it led Paramount Pictures to allow theaters to decide whether to continue screenings, reflecting an unexpected ethical and logistical dilemma.
Forty-five years later, The Warriors remains a cult classic, inspiring adaptations and analyses within dystopian and urban cinema. Its impact continues to be relevant, being studied for its aesthetics and narrative, as well as for how it reflected the social tensions of a crisis-ridden New York, resonating with the fears and hopes of a city marked by inequality.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has disrupted an extensive network of electronic devices in the New York area that posed imminent threats to the telecommunications of government officials and the United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place this week. This operation, led by the Secret Service, uncovered an infrastructure that included more than 300 servers and 100,000 SIM cards distributed across multiple locations less than 35 miles from the international meeting.
In the end, everything has been resolved. Thank goodness!
The director of the Secret Service, Sean Curran, warned that the potential for disruption to the country’s telecommunications could not be underestimated. The investigation, which is still ongoing, was initiated in response to “swatting” threats and bomb threats against U.S. officials. Reports indicate that the network may have been used to transmit anonymous murder threats against high-ranking officials.
In this operation, several agencies have collaborated, including the Department of Justice, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the New York Police Department, which reinforces the seriousness of the situation. The network of devices had allowed criminal organizations to operate undetected, raising concerns about their use by hackers, terrorists, and other criminal groups.

Few things work better than a good psychological thriller. One or two people facing an apparently impossible and desperate situation that they must confront with nothing but their will to move forward, or the need to do so at all costs. Netflix knows this well, as it has seen several of its biggest recent successes are psychological thrillers. And it seems that it wants to go with another one with one of the big bets of this autumn in the form of a miniseries with big names behind it.
Black Rabbit is the name of the miniseries and the big names are Jude Law and Jason Bateman. You know the former from the big screen, where he has starred in films like The Talented Mr. Ripley or Sherlock Holmes, in addition to being the lead in one of the most exquisite recent series you shouldn’t miss, The Young Pope. For his part, Jason Bateman is a familiar face, as besides Air, he is famous for his role in the intense and dark Ozark. Together, they star in this new psychological thriller that promises to leave us on the edge of our seats.
A miniseries for those seeking empathy in their tension
But what is Black Rabbit about? It’s about two brothers, Jake and Vince Friedkin, who share a restaurant considered the place to go in New York, the titular Black Rabbit. The problem is that Vince, played by Jason Bateman, has been away for a while, and upon his return, Jake, played by Jude Law, will have to confront all the old traumas and new threats that come with him. Because Vince is a handful.
Focusing on the nightlife and underworld of New York, the miniseries centers on the world of the mafia and the risks involved when trying to work with it. Or working at its expense. But the heart of this miniseries, like that of any good psychological thriller, is the relationship between its characters. The relationship between the two brothers is complicated, tense, volatile, and always filled with affection and love, being the center of the entire narrative: will their relationship survive all the problems that Vince will bring with him, or will they not even survive physically to them?
Two actors giving it their all
With an unreliable character who gets into trouble, but has a good heart; with another character who is more uptight, but is reliable and always willing to give a second chance, Netflix may have the perfect formula to win over the audience. Especially if the conflicts faced by the Friedkins are on par with their relationship.
With 8 episodes ahead, of which the first two will be directed by Bateman himself, the series promises to offer us exactly what we expect from this kind of productions: drama, tension, strong emotions, and a lot of suffering from a couple of characters that we would love to hate, but we are unable to not have affection for. Something very easy to achieve with two actors like Jude Law and Jason Bateman in the leading roles, and we have no doubt that they will elevate this production to another level.

In the vibrant world of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, sound realism plays a crucial role in player immersion. Since the title was released, it has stood out not only for its narrative and gameplay but also for the authenticity of the sound effects, especially those associated with the character’s webs. According to Bryan Intihar, the game’s creative director, the sound team embarked on a mission to capture the sounds that best represented the experience of swinging through New York, using genuine sound effects instead of relying on generic options.
You feel like a true Spider-Man
To achieve this authenticity, the team experimented with everyday objects such as aerosol streamers, cling film, and plastics, creating a sound collage that mixes real recordings with digital elements. This innovative approach allowed every movement of the webs to feel like a true launch, enhancing the combat and exploration experience of the game. Additionally, the team recorded the iconic “thwip” sound that all fans associate with Spider-Man, to give it a more personal and distinctive touch.
This attention to detail has been key for players to feel that every jump and every web-swing resonates with an authenticity expected from a hero of this magnitude. The decision to avoid repetitive and generic sounds has considerably enriched the gameplay, allowing players to immerse themselves in a thrilling and realistic adventure in the context of New York, where every move counts.
Those who have already tried the game agree that the originality of the sound effects and the attention to detail elevate the overall experience. Undoubtedly, the effort of the responsible team has not only been impressive, but it has also made players feel more connected to the hero while navigating the rooftops of the city. What remains to be seen is whether future installments will continue down this path of innovation and realism.
