Tesla has reached an agreement to acquire parts of Manz, an automation engineering company that recently filed for bankruptcy.
The transaction, signed on February 24, 2025, will allow Tesla to incorporate approximately 300 employees at its headquarters in Reutlingen, Germany. By the way, a country that has stopped buying its Tesla cars.
This acquisition is part of Tesla Automation’s strategy, a subsidiary of Tesla that specializes in the construction of special-purpose machines and which had already been formed through the purchase of another German firm, Grohmann.
What Tesla Gains from This Agreement in Germany
Manz, a multinational active in fields such as automation, laser processing, and metrology, decided to initiate bankruptcy protection proceedings, which opened the door to this acquisition by the automotive giant.
The company has announced that, in addition to the 300 employees who will join Tesla, unfortunately, around 100 will lose their jobs following the restructuring that will accompany the purchase. This suggests a reduction in staff despite the fact that the operation has an expansion focus in terms of technological capabilities.
The operation is now subject to the approval of the Federal Cartel Office of Germany, which means that, although the agreement has been signed, its formalization will depend on the country’s antitrust regulations.
The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but what is clear is that the acquisition provides Tesla with a highly skilled workforce in the area of mechanical engineering, necessary for the automation projects in which the electric vehicle manufacturer is involved.
Lothar Thommes, General Director of Tesla Automation, noted that the incorporation of employees from Manz is a crucial step for the successful execution of automation projects globally within the Tesla group, indicating that the Reutlingen site will complement its future innovative efforts.
