Sony has had a big success this year with the Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger. But this has only been the first in a series of video game film adaptations from the company. Not only of its own properties or of other Japanese companies they’ve historically worked with. Because, as we’ve learned, Sony will be in charge of adapting the psychological horror game Mouthwashing for film.
A game that takes horror to another level
Sony has reached an agreement with Scott Derrickson, the director of films like The Black Phone and Sinister, to adapt the game for the screen. Though he won’t be directing it. The director will be Karyn Kusama, known for films like Jennifer’s Body or The Invitation. And in fact, the film’s screenwriters will be two people she worked with on that second film: Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. Who, in turn, have worked on Clash of the Titans and Aeon Flux.
Mouthwashing is a horror game from Wrong Organ, released for PC in 2024, that was a hit with critics and players. Winning numerous awards, it combines a nonlinear narrative with psychological horror on a drifting spaceship that has lost all contact with Earth. This leads its crew to gradually lose hope and their minds when their captain, for reasons that aren’t clear at first, is left horribly mutilated and disfigured before the events of the game.
Having sold close to a million copies, it is one of the big recent successes in indie horror gaming. And now it will also be released on consoles, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. So if you’ve never played Mouthwashing, and given the announcement of its film, now’s the perfect time to play it. Especially when, on top of that, its PC version is on sale on Steam.
