The nominations for the 2024 Emmy Awards have just been revealed, and beyond Shogun’s domination with 25 award possibilities, there are some other distinguished works that are worth a look. And I’m not just talking about those well-known hits like The Bear, Fallout, The Crown, or Only Murders in the Building, but also many others which, though they’re popular, you probably aren’t familiar with. Here, we review four that you should see as soon as possible.
Palm Royale (Apple TV+)
Palm Royale has received three Emmy nominations, including Best Comedy Series, and it’s no wonder. The fiction series by Apple Studios starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, and –look here– Ricky Martin, takes us back to 1969. In this year, we follow the life of an ambitious woman who tries to cross the line separating the rich and poor to secure a place in the most exclusive, elegant, and treacherous circle in the United States: the high society of Palm Beach. So far, it has been an interesting season of 10 episodes.
Feud: Capote vs. The Swans (Max)
The second season of Feud, an anthology fiction series by FX and broadcasted internationally by Max, has also made it to the Emmy’s best with four acting nominations. This time, Feud focuses on the story of how writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) surrounded himself with glamorous New York socialites, known as “The Swans”, including Barbara Babe Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, and Lee Radziwill. After becoming their confidant, Capote betrays them by writing stories exposing their secrets. Eight one-hour episodes that clearly tell this intriguing American story.
Hacks (Max)
With three seasons already behind them, Hacks was one of the most distinguished series of this year’s Emmys, receiving four nominations in the acting and comedy categories. The series follows the relationship between Deborah Vance (Jean Smart), a legendary comedian from Las Vegas whose career is in decline, and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), a conflicted young writer. The two are obligated to work together by their shared agent, in hopes of revitalizing Deborah’s material and giving her a boost in her career. Available on Max, it’s a gem worth seeing.
The Morning Show (Apple TV+)
Finally, we can’t forget about The Morning Show, a series on Apple TV+ that has achieved the incredible feat of 10 nominations in a variety of categories. The series features a stellar cast led by Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell, and Reese Witherspoon. Each season manages to be better than the last. The Morning Show dives into the world of morning TV shows and the turmoil behind the scenes. The plot revolves around Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), the veteran host of a popular morning show, whose professional and personal life is shaken when her long-time co-host, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell), is fired due to allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior. To maintain the show’s relevance, the network hires Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), a free-spirited journalist with strong opinions, which leads to great tensions and rivalries.
