The first animated film made by AI that wants to compete at the Oscars will be released in theaters. It’s pure slop

Production companies quickly understood that there’s a way to catch the public’s attention so they’ll buy tickets: offer them things made by the creators they trust. That’s what happened with Markiplier and Iron Lung, or with Kane Parsons and Backrooms. Now, Fable, an AI animation studio, is going to try to repeat that success by with a long-shot bid built around Gods Don’t Give Gifts, YouTuber Gossip Goblin’s first film… made entirely with AI, of course.

Well, AI guess that’s that

Gossip Goblin has 1.5 million subscribers on his channel, where he’s clearly found an audience, with short films that have topped 9.3 million views and Shorts that have topped 15 million views. For now, the first trailer for Gods Don’t Give Gifts has passed 500,000 views, although, yes, only with around 7,400 “likes”. Enough to mount an Oscars campaign? Apparently so.

Actually, this film (which is surprisingly visually “slop”) is a collection of four short films by the director, and it will be screened in the United States starting on December 4. Or that’s what they promise, given that they still haven’t found a distributor. Obviously, this bid for an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature is meant to show just how strongly the public and the Academy oppose the technology. And when they don’t nominate them, well, they’ll already have their talking points.

The head of Fable, the AI company that created the film, says that “For 5 years the question has been, when will an AI film win the Oscar? Gods Don’t Give Gifts is the first one that has a chance to be nominated, and after that we’ll see”. They know perfectly well that they’re not going to be nominated and that no one in the industry is really interested, but they’re going to have to watch it. Anyway. What a world.
