The game starts in Cirith Ungol, the outskirts of Mordor infested with orcs, about 60 years after Bilbo Baggins stole the One Ring from our slimy and fragile protagonist, Sméagol, or Gollum, as he is known.
The story, which takes place shortly before the events depicted in The Fellowship of the Ring, is immediately recognizable to anyone even remotely familiar with the series: Gollum must find Bilbo and retrieve his “precious” at all costs, while avoiding Sauron’s wrath along the way.
You control Gollum in third person (except when swimming, oddly enough). He can barely lift a metal spoon, let alone wield a weapon, so combat is not the main focus, except for occasional opportunities to sneak up from behind and strangle enemies.
Instead, the game revolves around stealth. You use relatively scarce surfaces to climb, crawl in shadows to remain unnoticed on the ground, and throw rocks to extinguish lights or distract guards.
And if all of this wasn’t enough, analysts from various media outlets have made it clear that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a game that is not ready to be played.
Some experts claim that the game has crashed on them over 100 times in just 10 hours of gameplay.
